The Fellbeast looks really great but there is something distinctly wrong about that eagle - the sculpt has made the wings too long and much too thin especially near the body. This is contrary to the planform seen on all types of eagle - you can see lots of examples in Google or any other search engine.
Here are a few examples:
http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-a ... 4104_n.jpg
http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/arc ... 31381c.jpg
http://www.raptortrack.org/wp-content/u ... gle2b2.jpg
The other thing that bugs me is the chunky feathers. Sorry for being negative but this is the first time I have see this sculpt in plan view and it is very disappointing.

Hm I never noticed that before DOrth! But how do they say on the internet? "what has been seen, cannot be unseen" ^^
Indeed, now that you did mention this, it looks a bit strange how they sculpted the wings... :|
Maybe giant eagles simply have a different anatomy.. : D

In RotK the eagles came to help the Army of the West at the Battle of the Morannon - look at the shape of the giant eagles as they appeared in the film:

http://www.framecaplib.com/lotrlib/html ... tk2212.htm
Thick chord wings, massively powerful, fantastic lift and thrust capability.

These are the old metal Wood Elf War Eagles from Warhammer and are just showing their age: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catal ... rod1091023

Not the current crop for LOTR/The Hobbit? Ok, that's better news.

Oh no, these were picked up cheap second hand well before the new Eagles were released though I'm sure Amy will pick some of those up in time.

A little more painting done today, first up the Fellbeast is now done (yipee!) and being glued to the stand so just the base left to paint which shouldn't take too long:

Next up are Amy's Eagles, one is complete and the other just needs its claws and beak painting and then on to the basing for them:

Comments welcome as always

It's been a while since the last update but we have been slowly making progress so thought it was time for an update.
I finished the base on the Fellbeast so he's all done now:

I then put together the Fallen Dwarves for painting at a later date:

As I am now currently anti-shine varnishing all my Easterlings and doing there unit basing, of which I have just done the cavalry:

Image

Amy has finished her Eagles and is now stripping some Elves and started work on another batch of Gondorian cavalry:

That's all for now, C&C welcome as always.

Nice, the fellbeast looks great! The eagles are also looking good. Is that two army packs of fallen dwarves?

Superb painting! The fellbeast is magnificently evil. Great looking Easterling Kataphrakts.

They are indeed, I get mine from www.warbases.co.uk, I find them much better to work with than the plastic trays from GW.

It's one army pack plus two sets of infantry if I remember correctly, lovely miniatures and at a very reasonable price.

That's the molded base it comes with, I found it quite hard to work with because the detailing was quite soft but I'm very happy with the end result.

The moment of truth has arrived for me, today I finished my armies!
Here are the group shots though I'll be playing with them for the first time tomorrow (I promised myself not to play with them until they were completed) so I'll try to grab some 'in action' shots then:

I still have the Fallen Dwarves to paint but I'll be returning to these at a later date as I'm moving on to other projects now, do not fear though as I'll be tracking the progress of these in the non-LOTR section here so please come on over, have a look and let me know what you think :)

Amy is now basing up her Gondor and Rohan armies and has now just started a test model for her Elf contingent, more progress on this fellow as I get it:

That's all for now but comments always welcome.

Phil

The Easterling horde is magnificent! The Morgul force is suitably dark and dangerous but the serried ranks of gold and scarlet are very, very eye-catching. It WILL intimidate the opposition. Best of luck!

I love the Easterlings. Definitely will have to use spare drum parts from my Kataphract kits to convert some drummers on foot as well. Thanks for the inspiration!
