As this will be a very long, drawn out project I deemed it better to make a new thread specificly for this board (and a couple of other terrain-y bits).

Anyway, here's a start:




2, 60x530x600mm blue insulation foam
1, 60x570x1450mm blu insulation foam
4, 500 sqaure aluminium boards (like the stuff used for signposts)

Well I suppose this is an update of sorts...
I've chopped 2 of the boards to size... here's my findings:

Carving knife: Rubbish. Got about 2 inches and then got stuck due to the density of the board.

heated carving knife: as above... but about 3 inches deep.

Hack saw: Very good. Got me about 10 inches deep either side and then got stuck due to the thick metal bit. Clean and accurate

Saw: Good enough. Got me all the way through but not as clean or accurate as the hack saw.

Sorry for the lack of progress hereabouts... having trouble determining what kind of board I actually want to make.
The original idea was to have a board based around a river but me and my brother (with whom I am doing this project) have decided that a river would be way too expensive.

I have some ideas but I am still somewhat lost as to which one to do so some ideas would be awesome and some awesome ideas would be awesome-er

I will consider anything (apart from black mordor-y terrain)....

Sid, there are tools designed to cut this sort of board. Depending on the brand, some are called insulation board saws. They have a blade about as deep as a school ruler, with an array of fine teeth, like a large hacksaw. I have one that I think I got in B&Q but the damned thing has absolutely no writing on it so I do not even know the brand (black and yellow handle suggests Stanley but that is not conclusive).
Some people use hotwire cutters as they offer a range of sculpting possibilties, but you do need to use them in a well ventilated place (or outdoors) due to the poisonous fumes (like Mordor).

How about an outpost on a rocky hill/outcrop. Sort of in a similar vein as Amon Sul, but a different race/design of the building. Could be ruined, could be recently built.

Alas... My brother and I quickly found that building such a board as this would be much too expensive for our stingy budget. So we're selling the foam boards on eBay. Seeing as the incredibly expensive option of a river was out of the question we figuered we could probably do as well with the foam as without (no need for so much depth without a river) and so that why we're selling.

Don't get me wrong, we're still doing the board... just without the foam

Probably Stanley or jcb. Although the b&q I work in doesn't sell them. A fret saw might come in handy. Apparently a bit of old guitar string attached to a 9v battery works.

In our FoW gaming (15mm...not AS bad as 10mm) I use felt for marking area terrain. I am only getting started on basic terrain for that game and it really is the most affordable way to go...not to mention portable! Actual 3D trees and such for 'area terrain' are cosmetic only in game terms. We use them to decorate the zones and make the table more interesting but you can move the actual tree models around and remove them as long as you don't move the 'area' itself. Very UNLIKE in SBG. Hills, buildings, raised roads, etc. are all more real with regard to LOS rules but area features have well defined rules by themselves.

I do think felt-based water features are perfectly fine for SBG. For a few dollars you can get a large amount of material from a craft store and cut a variety of lengths and shapes and just mix them together on your table as you like.

Hooraaahh!!

Some progress finally on the board!!

I've coated it in many many layers of sand, finishing it off with about 3 coats of watered down PVA for extra resistance against bashes and the likes.



So now I've sprayed it white and given it a good earthy wash all over and that's as far as I've got so far. Next up I'll add some more details including some static grass, rocks and then finally snow

I recommend WS spray glue. If you want to make your own spray glue do not use white PVA. There is a very steep learning curve with home made spray glue. It is not cost effective for small projects. If some one really thinks they want to make it. It is a separate topic.There is also a problem with caned spray glue. I can't recommend a brand in the UK. I don't recommend it at all for this application.It drys too fast or not at all.

Making your own flocking can be cost effective in small batches.There is a good link in my other post.
Again Dave Frary books have formulas for spray glue and ground colors. I can not recommend them enough.

What size is the board? Using the grass for scale it looks like 50cm x 50cm.
