Looks very impressive, I like the overall look and feel a lot! For the transition from long to short grass, how about using the same color static grass but with shorter length for the mowed lawn (with some longer grass clumps thrown in as well)?

It all looks great, yet something about the long grass still bothers me. I don't really know what it is though.. maybe the length or the "messiness"... It just doesnt look as natural as the rest of you bag end somehow..

I think it is the edge rather than the grass application. The long grass looks nice.

Some medium green clump and or net foliage at the edge of the walk should do the trick.

I do not have a photo of the green net foliage. You use it by stretching the net apart. You can apply it by adding it to the edge directly over the long grass.
I think your project looks very nice. I am looking forward to the garden. I recently purchased some corn plants and have a order with Scenic Express for some tomato plants. O gage is the correct size for 28mm.

I really love the attention to detail like the drainage stones! It's looking like a professional museum type display piece.
Looking forward to seeing the plants go in.
Is that a home brew kit in the background?

I will update a photo soon, but I've used the same long grass over the lawned area and cut it down / applied it less sporadic. Hopefully that will seem better.

This has given me food for thought. Perhaps once everything is in place it will give the look I'm after and everything will fit together. The small mound near the path isn't finished, though it virtually is. I am waiting for some clumps of weeds and more flowers to be delivered, which will go on both sides of the path. A little trim here and there with the long grass will still be needed in this area.

Charlie - Net foliage ? Do you mean something like ivy ? I have some ivy on order that I will apply in small areas.

Well spotted Paul. Thats a cheeky 5 gallons of Blackberry wine. I've been so busy of late that I haven't had chance to make much. This has been sat there for a month waiting for a final polish.

I've started making my first ever tree. It's still to be painted but I'm liking the texture to it. It has that old gnarled look I wanted for an oak tree.
Some presents to myself have arrived which has meant the pond has it's first layer of water and I'm close to laying out the kitchen garden.

All kinds of cool stuff in the back ground!

The tree looks good so far. Have you decided on the method for the foliage?

all natural material
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5I6qKNReuo

I substitute local natural materials. No sage brush here. I use lichen instead of yarow. Your home made armature will work much the same way.
I am looking for a good video on substituting Poli fil. The same thing I used for the fire effect. You will have lots of choices.

I'm using a method similar to the railroad one you've listed
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7tnBIdbL9sY
I've put the poly fibre in place and just waiting for some coarse scatter to be delivered. It looks good in place on the hill though I'm unsure if it's big enough. I will wait until the tree is finished before I post an update of it.
I might get some of the kitchen garden done today.

Have I enjoyed having some new toys to play with ? Definately - I was unsure about the kitchen garden but once they have been clumped together then I think they are looking more like the finish I wanted. The tree was great to do and also my first play with realistic water.

The below shows the overall picture to date.

The image I had in my head all those months ago is starting to come together.Image

Now this is the problem area I had of merging the long grass into the short. This again isn't finished as I have some tufts to be placed here and there. You also get a look at the pond and the kitchen garden. There are nine areas I had in mind but I will have to alter this as I've found they are too close to the hedge and bushes. The well will be in one of the patches and I will consider how to do the other two patches.

Image

Now you can see a close up of the pond. It hasn't quite cured yet so its still a little murky. I haven't done this as well as I wanted. I did two base layers mixed with mucky colours but I did the first one too thick for the bottom of the pond to show through. I finished with two clear layers. I haven't done any water effects but do you think it's needed ? Something like a ripple of circles ?

Image

And finally the oak tree. If anything I'm concerned it is not quite big enough, but there again would any bigger drown out the other things ? I think I will keep this one.

Image

There is still plenty more to do and a few toys have still to arrive. I intend for practicality reasons to finish the kitchen garden, well and bushes up to the middle of the front lawn. Then i will have a clear area to work on the fence without worrying of my clumsy fingers squashing something.

Well done! too much to comment on at once.

Image

The tree might be too small. However, it has to fit in the space you have for it.
The tree is very nice. I would not have believed it was your first.

The pond looks very nice as well.
The water effects are a matter of taste. The nice thing about water effects is that you can make them separately from the pond and add them if they turn out the way you like. Check some of the waterfall how to's.

More photos please!

Thanks Charlie. I think I'm going to stick with the tree and pond as they are for now at least. I may re-visit the tree and do another one in the future but not yet.
I will get some more photos done and I think they will be some close ups.

Unfortunately there is still quite a way to go. There's Frodo and Sam to be converted and painted as well as the fence, gate, extra scenery and some finishing touches.

Thank you to all for your comments.

Even more gobsmacking than last time. Now all you need is a hobbit seated smoking a pipe and an elderly gentleman (long bear, pointy hat) pausing for a conversation).
