Another anonymous (so take with a large pinch of salt) rumour from Faeit 212 says:

Quote:
- Smaug
The Dragon was not rejected by WB due to the model but due to the size. GW was told when they want to make one it has to be in the same proportion as the
other model range leaving us with a roughly 35” Dragon which is not going to happen

Which is contrary to what we were thinking about the Smaug model change being due to a dragon-to-wyvern style change of Smaug in the films.

Whatever the reason for the model's change, I can't see Smaug being the only reason why the entire Hobbit range would be delayed. They could simply delay that model a couple of months, they don't have to release him in the first wave. For the other ones, they didn't release everything in the first month, and with the amount of other stuff they have from DoS, they've got space to wait before they release Smaug. I doubt Smaug would even be in the first month's products, because the models would likely be available before the film comes out, and that would ruin the surprise of seeing Smaug on-screen.

Unless, of course, the Smaug model features frequently in the rulebook they're releasing, and they have to do a lot of reprinting.

A 35 inch long dragon.... I would get one of those as long as it is multipart plastic.

I saw that too. However, a 35 inch tall model would work out to 140 scale feet tall. Way too big for a dragon. I think 35 scale feet tall or 9 inches tall makes more sense. It is a rumor after all. My math is based on 1/48 or O scale and is an approximation.

Image

The Limited D&D Red Dragon. About 50 scale feet.
A LOTR figure measures only 5 feet tall with a 1/48 scale ruler so there is some fudge factor.

I think by 35 inches they meant either the wingspan or the full stretched out length from snout to tail - standing height would be less, and depending on pose, the dragon would take up less space (imagine the size of the carry-case!). Heck, something in the region of that one you have shown is probably acceptable as a gaming piece. It may turn out that a Smaug toy could be the 'right' proportionate size (eats mumaks:))

35 inches is bigger than the table I use for gaming, I think, and larger than one of the pieces of a Realm of Battle gameboard. There is no way in existence that GW would release a 35-inch model. 3 foot (36 inches) is also about half my height, so no. Just no.

Even with fuzzy math that is too big. I would like to have one that size but it is way too large for a game figure. Does anyone know off hand how large the dragon is supposed to be? I would look it up but I am already late.

They made a 2' long dragon model back in the 80s.. which was so heavy that the molds broke. Wings couldn't be cast, had to make a membrane yourself.

That does sound unreasonably big. It could be doable if the model was posed correctly, on a special scenic base ( I'm thinking a tall, but leaning pillar, which Smaug could rest on and wrap his tail and neck around), but it runs the risk of looking stupidly scrunched up, and not nearly as impressive as Smaug NEEDS to be.

IF that's the reason for the the Smaug miniatures delay, then I can't see Smaug coming any time soon, sadly. If true, I feel quite sorry for GW, as that sounds like WB is being utterly ignorant and uncaring of the practical realities of the range. I suppose they have the right to be, but It doesn't make them right to do it.

And there's no chance of a Smaug toy this year, i'm afraid - Bridge Direct, the toy company behind the line, has announced that what's already out is 'it'. They 'hope' to get the rest of the Dwarves out with TABA. The whole line seems like a write off, for them. Could've told them that when they packaged exclusive figures in with box sets of single packed characters, making it completely unnecessary to buy the single figures that most places stocked and causing the entire line to warm shelves all year. Toy opportunity of the decade, squandered through complete mismanagement.

There's plenty of decent sized toy dragons around, though. I'm waiting to see the film, and then I might just nab one if it looks right, or could be converted easily. I've considered doing the same before, because I'm not a fan of the GW dragon.

Tracklist's been up on iTunes for a fair while now, at least since the Ed Sheeran end credits song was released.

Given that Bilbo is a small hobbit, Smaug is pretty big:
http://www.framecaplib.com/lotrlib/html ... rlr187.htm
That is Smaug's neck in the second picture:
http://www.framecaplib.com/lotrlib/html ... rlr253.htm
The all metal dragon was madness. But can plastic go that big? Oh yes it can.
For example:

The wingspan of a B-29 is 141 feet and 3 inches 8)
Or 35 1/4 inches in 1/48 the same size as the B-29 kit

How large is the forgeworld great fire dragon? That thing is beastly, it would be awesome to see something similar.

From Forgeworld site:
Quote:
This huge Warhammer Fire Dragon model is approximately 8'' (200mm) high and 13'' (330mm) long to the curve in the tail.

Out of stock but you can look at it here:

Wouldn't it be great if the Smaug model blew the Forgeworld dragon out of the water! Quite a challenge but he really should be the poster boy for the miniature collection.

I'm slightly worried about how much everyone is focusing on the Smaug model. I can only see a lot of disapointment coming.

The likelyhood is that It's either going to be far too large to game with or far to small to be proper scale. And either way it's going to be very expensive.
