If you were on TLA back in the day you might remember me as "ElessarTheGreat". Turns out I'm back, and over the next year I plan to strip all of my old models and start repainting them.

First let's have a retrospective on the last models I painted - must have been around 2007 - these were the peak of my painting abilities back in the day.

Elrond: a bit messy sure, but I like the vibrant colours I got into this model. Really fun to paint.
Image
Image

Gothmog: personally one of my favourites ever, I like the ragtag look I gave his armour and how the strap and stuff stand out.
Image
Image

Shagrat: This was the best conversion I've ever done, and I love the dark, gloomy, Cirith Ungol look that I've got here.

I'll continue in the next post since I don't want this to get too heavy on the photos!

This is my sole attempt at NMM. Uruk Hai scout. I think it went okay.

Uruk Hai warband featuring Lurtz and Ugluk. Got a full box of 24 scouts to paint and I never finished the full lot of these ones, got about 16 done. However I want to move to a lighter basing scheme as shown in Elrond and Gothmog because I feel my models are too dark in general, so I will probably strip all of these and start over again and re base them.
Image

Plans: strip all of my Minas Tirith warriors and heroes - Denethor, Boromir and Faramir as well as standard bearers and 1 captain. These are fairly easy to paint with basic colours so I'll start with these to see if I can do stuff to an okay level and see how it all goes - then move onto my other forces like the Uruks and stuff.

The camera I used for these was my Google Nexus 5 phone camera with HDR+ mode enabled in case anyone wanted to know.

Feedback will be appreciated.

Stripping/de basing is the most boring thing ever.

How do you guys debase? I've just stuck them in water until the PVA loosens and then scrape them off with the blade of a penknife.

I'm going back to Uni on Sunday so none of this is likely going to get done until Summer. Gotta get started though.

Maybe its just me and I missed the point. I have so little time now for painting which is a shame. Why do you want to strip and repaint your own models? I think your painting skills were just fine and if you want to paint more you can buy more unpainted new figures or some badly painted ones off of ebay. It seems a tragedy to strip nice painted figures. You could maybe even sell some and buy some more or is that not possible?

I still have some really old 15mm Romans from when I started painting many moons ago. Perhaps not the best painted figures but en masse can do some big battles with what I have gathered over the years. So you could keep your nice figures and get some more to paint up to add to your collection.

I have a bunch of horribly based, horribly painted models in my loft. I was sorting through them all this Christmas and was like "oh wow what are these" and since I've been getting back into my art recently with lots of drawings I decided to free up a bit of spare time and strip my old plastic and metal models this holiday (90% of which sucked).

So I'll repaint my Gondor forces which I'm currently stripping, have bought a couple of new models on eBay so far, and see how good I can paint them.

By the time I'm back to Elrond, Gothmog and the Uruk scouts I'll see how good I am at painting stuff, if I've surpassed myself I'll strip them off, and if not then I wont.

This will be long and ongoing since the next 5 months will likely be filled with doing my dissertation, being at Uni and EXAMS. But you gotta start somewhere eh.

Faramir, Captain and Standard Bearer, and a few Minas Tirith warriors all successfully stripped.

Also stripped this guy who I picked up on eBay with an awful paint job for like...two quid:

I imagined Shagrat directing troops with one hand and like the pointed finger so much it was a shame to take it off...so I imagined he strapped his shield onto on of his arms to more accurately direct troops.

Nice stripping work - on the minis. Ahem.
Good conversions too. Some peope use greenstuff to give some of the standard WoMT the sort of Osgiliath Veterans look - battle hardened.

Yeah I'm not really confident in my sculpting abilities so I'll just leave them mainly "vanilla" I guess. I have some broken Riders of Rohan though so I'm planning to give axes to a couple of the broken MT Spearmen.

Picked up on eBay this week:
Gandalf the White on foot to lead the MT forces.
Boromir Captain of the White Tower on foot also to lead the forces.
Eomer Mounted as the start/expansion of a small Rohan force.
24 Mordor Orcs to add to the core of my Mordor Army
Plastic Mordor Troll Kit
12 Last Alliance Warriors

Damn...that's a lot of stuff. This is on top of 20 Easterlings to fix/strip, at least 30 Uruk Hai, a couple of metal Warg Rigers, some Cataphrakts which I appear to have lost, 2 Cave Trolls to find/fix, some metal Haldir's wood elves, the entire Fellowship at least twice, random 3rd Age heroes, about 20 Orcs, and about 20 Haradrim. Should be fun.

New model day, mounted Eomer. I plan to give this dude a shield from one of my many broken plastic Riders.

Also somehow get my hands on a horse with it's head down. Think it looks better for hero models because you see more of the model.

Does anyone have a picture of Eomer using a shield in the movies? Want to know what design and colour of shield he has.

There's no shield for him in the films :)
There's ofc the GW version with shield... Personnally a reddish colour would suit his armor well :)

I swear he has a shield when he's at the Black Gate with the host of the West?

Hm...I don't have my DVD with me so I'll guess I'll have to wait.

Sir, I must admit (in deepest shame) that you've proven me wrong! ^^

look at this, at 0:46: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XlxveFy7QG0

there's a shield indeed, strange thing though is, it's much smaller, than the other Rohirrim shields and it looks way too "simple" for a shield for Eomer.. maybe he took it away from Merry? ;)

Jesus christ his Shield is tiny it does actually look like he's nicked Merrys!

I'm going to give him a spar star design Rider of Rohan shield then and paint a more intricate gold design on it then so it looks more befitting of a royal.
