At what point costs and in what manner are the major heros worth it?

I firmly believe that an army to lower pt cost to medium is the best and most competitive army.

My question is what do you guys think and how do you use big heros?

When I say big I mean for example:
Boromir Captain of the White Tower
Aragorn in any form really
Prince Imrahil
Knight of the Pellenor
Elendil
Celeborn
Glorifindel
Gil Galad
Elrond

And many more but generally models that are like 125-140 pts plus.

I can see using them in 750 pt battles, 800 and of course 100. But honestly below that I would never use them for like 650 or less more than likely.

Anyway in what manner do you guys go about this with strategy?

I chose, yes at 550 because it is heaps of fun and awesome to use aragon all the time although it is not always the wiseest decision.

Depends upon the faction and the points limit. For Moria I almost never exceed 60pts for a hero, for Dwarves a 100+ point hero is common for my lists

See thats funny because although I understand why you wouldnt take high point heros in a moria army, some would be confused that you take high pt heros in an army of high pt models.

It really is a balancing act and depends entirely on the army you're bringing, play style and the points level. I play 500 points most of the time, which is a tough level as it's hard to include the higher points heroes without severely diminishing your numbers.

But I still like getting in someone like Knight of the Pelennor to do the business. But that is made more possible by the fact the army he is included in (the all mounted rohan) is a small, elite-ish army anyway. Whereas much tougher to include say an Aragorn in a viable 500 point Arnor list.

But that's not to say it can't be done :) Especially if a faction has really cheap heroes to make up for it. Gondor for example!

I take Imrahil at 600pts with Gondor, but then I also take Beregond, Cirion, and Damrod to offset his cost and allow for other full warbands :)

@ lordelrond see thats surprising to a player like me. I almost always will take major archery at a tournament. Either a bunch of wood elves uruk hai with crossbows or something else.

Seems to me I'd love to see your army because as long as rolls came out as necessary I'd be able to kill your elves before gil and glor could break Me.

@ Gwaryan yeah that's what I'd generally do except with Boromir instead because he kicks butt but yeah I'd use Beregond and Dam rod with him automatically.

He can indeed lead a warband, stick a hornblower/ erkenbrand in your list aswell and you're sorted.

Yeah I hear people say that, and its true that its almost 100% he will be good the whole game, but at the same time although the horn works for the whole army, youre paying a lot of extra points to make him work.

I'd save Boromir for higher pts games than 600. He and Imrahil have the exact same statline aside from might, and 3pts of might is often sufficient for a hero at that points level. The special rule is nice but I don't think it justifies the larger price tag.

Ah I missed the 600 pt tag. Yeah I see what youre saying. If Id use Boromir with all that might id just keep heroic combating or heroic moving and really control one part of the board.

Legolas w. armour, Gilgalad on horse, Glorfindel armoued and on horse at a 400pts tournie. Came 4th of 16... should have come 2nd but for a miscalculation by myself and GBHL Jamie.
