Ha!!! I got one of these too to round out my Gondor force.
I am totally in the same box as you are.

It follows the rules for Siege Equipment.

Off the top of my head.

1. Roll a D6 to determine the number of shots. If the Swift Reload upgrade is purchased, you can roll 2D6 and choose the highest result for your number of shots.

2. Pick your target and roll to hit (using the worst shoot value of the crewmen) for the first shot.

3. Roll for scatter.

1 = Your opponent picks one of your models model within 3" to be hit.
2-5 = Your opponent picks one of his models within 3" to be hit.
6= The shot hits the target that you selected.

4. Roll to wound.

5. Repeat steps 3-4 for every other shot.

EDIT: Rangefinder is correct, the Avenger Bolt Thrower (as with other bolt throwers e.g. Mordor Siege Bow, Isengard Siege bow) only scatters 3".

I love my bolt Throwers, both with Gondor and in Mordor I have never been disappointed taking them (often I take 2 in each force), great range, awesome damage, and it's presence will often change your opponents tactics (especially because of that range keeps those long range elves bows from feeling safe back there).

I just went over the rules. It's pretty straight forward. The Avenger Bolt Thrower is more "accurate", less scatter. Couple quality upgrades for it. You can take a Captain, and then have 3 guy's manning it. Therefore you can also move it, albeit slowly. I am going to paint mine up and put it into action the next battle I chance onto!

Just to add another comment, these also work really well in WotR games.

But, opponents will learn and adapt if you use them consecutively with a force; for example they may take a flying unit or cav units and go for your siege bows first in the game to reduce the damage they can have in long battles. For this reason, I will usually have multiple army lists so that I can swap these in/out when playing multiple games/matches. Try to switch them out (and also heroes too) with something that has very different tactical strengths/weaknesses. Just a tactic thought.

The Dwarf Ballista is ridiculously destructive in WOTR!
Two maxed out Formations of these can annihilate your whole army it seems.
My Mumakil were just there for target practice.
I did an end run on them with reinforcements from Host of Karna!

If found the avenger bolt thrower really good the 2 times i picked it in games with my fiefdoms (allied to gondor). I always had 2 mounted knights about 10 cm behind it so anyone trying attacking it was counter charged by cavalry. :D
Id say always pick it with swift reload and a captain and also you MUST adjust your whole army with its play style. it will also limit your enemies tactics as mentioned above, either trying to focus on it or completely avoid it ;)
so take advantage of this.

I played a game with DMS where my Gondor force were defending the crumbling ruins of a Castle against his Ukuk Hai. I put my Avenger up in a tower out of reach of his Uruks (my men were defending the walls and stairs leading to it). It must have racked up 20 or so kills through the game, so many that it got to the point that I told him to just keep moving his dead onto the board as reinforcements (I was teaching him the game and this was our 2nd or 3rd game so it was just for S&G).

DMS probably suffers PTSD everytime he sees an Avenger

Sorry for the off topic spam, but when it comes to Bolt Thrower, this is how it works \m/
