Well this is the biggest argument I've ever seen on this forum which has nothing to do with the thread's title lol.

No I think there's some good things been said about Gundabad Orcs, and the merits (or not) of Grimhammers. Was mostly civil. You go on other forums and you'd see things 10 times worse than this.

@LotBR: I bumped it, see my post on previous page (and reply if you want). :)

Just wait until ToS and see if anyone uses them. I'm sure the real proof is in the pudding....

I'm sure there will be man plenty of people use Isengard and they are pretty much urukhai with lower fight and Dol guldur/Azogs Hunters can def use some high defense troopers.

If they didn't cost so much I would have gotten at least like 12 with shield and 12 with pike.

I wonder why? I mean the models look like they have spears, but surely it's more beneficial to GW for them to be armed with pikes? It makes them more of an attractive option to players, which probably means more purchases - and it's not as if there are that many other pike armed models anyway (I can only think of 4).

They did it so people couldn't proxy fighting uruk-hai as Gundabads.

I NEVER use an unthemed list, even if it handicaps me, whether its Warhammer 40K or LOTR SBG. I pick a theme, build my army around that theme, and then look for tactics and strategies to make it work. Like ramming a square peg into a round hole

As for the Gundabad Orcs...I might use them for conversions, maybe to represent a Warband of Barad Dur Black Guards in my Angmar army.

(using the Black Guard warrior & Captain profiles, but with the themed background that they're an Elite cadre of Orcs serving the Witch King out of Carn Dum).

Giving units another name does not mean they are themed. Just because you call Rumil Anarion and say the galafhrim guards are elite numenoreans does not mean it is themed. You could mix everything together giving them new names, but this does have nothing to do with theme.

Actually it kinda does, when You want to tailor a list to an idea, but the limitations of the game don't allow for everything without sometimes taking poetic license with other models/proxies. A theme can be historical, aesthetic, or completely imagined.

It utterly depends on why you're doing it. Mertaal converted a fantastic Goblin Town Shaman recently (check it out in his WIP viewtopic.php?f=50&t=26761&start=260), I believe he's planning on a 1000 point Goblin army consisting of about 500 points of Goblin town and 500 points of Moria profiles. Howeverr, he's converting all his moria profile models to look like they're from Goblin Town whilst giving his army list some diversity. I'm all up for that, it's creative, its fun and it's clearly done out of a genuine desire to 'theme' an army.

On the other hand, taking a Groblog + 2 Shaman Moria Horde alongside a warband of Watchers of Karna and Abrakhan Guard that you call 'Goblin slaves' and 'Fat Goblin Slaves' and a Witch King that is actually 'The Ghost of Groblog's Dad' and trying and claim that it's themed is just plain stupid. If you want to build a powerful list using lots of different factions and play to win then great, there's nowt wrong with that, but don't try and cover it up by changing the names of the models and calling it themed.

“Fat Goblin Slaves” I just laughed out loud in the office at that one

But I do agree, there is theme where someone is taking troops from a few different lists but to represent a different age of LOTR for example and there is “theme” when someone is trying to justify a number of unit selections which make no actual sense to maximise their armies potential

I think mertaal once observed “I must have missed that part of the books/films” and it’s a good rule of thumb in my opinion :D

(Thanks for the link Damian).

Obviously I agree with the above two gentlemen! Personally, I play this game because I love Middle Earth, and I like the idea of gaming inside that universe. Seeing Khazad Guard supported with Wose spears and led by Malbeth the Seer, or an army of Warriors of Minas Tirith with their swords snipped off and replaced by axes to get access to piercing strike I die a little inside.

It's GW's fault for building the potential to do that in to the rules, but I do think that if you want to win enough to resort to bizarre combinations of troops which would not be seen together thematically, you're disrespecting the fantastic world this game is set in.

Then again, I feel more or less the same about playing games against unpainted armies because for me the visual appeal of the battlefield is one of the principal reasons to play the game. I realise not everyone brings the same desires and expectations to the gaming table, and so I don't criticise or get snarky when facing an army that I consider to be a filthy combination but try to play the game for its own merits.

One thing is certain though, the games I like the best are where both sides are using "pure" armies or alliances themed on actual battlefield forces such as pelennor or Helm's Deep. Under those circumstances I can actually get caught up in the drama and story of what is happening, and it feels like a real battle, not an abstracted technical exercise.

To put it another way, why play a fantasy themed game to then ignore the theme?

...it was a weak moment  Don't worry, that army is back on the shelf now

I'm the same, I love theme and fully painted awesomeness on the field.
