Drool! Do I sound weird if I say that looks nice? Maybe appropriate in the circumstances would be a better turn of phrase.
Very bright or very dark backgrounds tend to make cameras either underexpose or overexpose. If the mini is dark against a bright backdrop, the issue is even more noticeable. Neutral backgrounds are better all round, but the photos of Fimbul are fine. (Especially the close up of the drooling jaws - that would look fantastic on Prodos new AvP Aliens).

I'll take some photos of him on a grey background, I normally do them all white for my website ( the site is white so there's no image borders, creating more emphasis on the models)

Also going to try and get some scenery and backdrops sorted to do some nice scenic photos :)

Great work in this thread Amy. You've made an incredible start, and obviously have a lot of natural talent. I can't wait to see what you come up with in the future also!

Whaaaaat!! I am so jealous of your natural talent. Do you have any painting experience before hand, like art at secondary school?

I did art in years 7,8,9 but I was never any good, but that was 8 years ago now! Thank you all so much for your comments, I am genuinely surprised by all the positive comments. I look at my work and think it looks rubbish, but I guess you do when it's your own work. But it is very encouraging to have so many nice comments, I really enjoy my new found hobby! :)

All the work looks good, high end table top standard. I can tell that you have a good painter in the room because some of the things you are trying you would need to watch and read articles for several months to get clued in on. There is nothing wrong with learning or getting tips, we all wish we had that access. I am sure just having painted miniatures on a shelf to inspire idea's is a big help to one getting started.
Either way you are taking it with your own strides and are putting out some great work (and upsetting the other newbs in the process). Don't rush too much, I think some of your wargs faces could use a bit of love since they have some great details on them and it is harder to go back than forward, blood splatter is nice, but picking out those razor teeth and sinister growling faces is much more fearsome to behold.

Interestingly, I once tried to get my Daughters mother into this hobby, she painted Arwen and did a fantastic job, she picked the colors and all I did was tell her what order to do them and pointed out area's to tighten up. And it looked great but she was not into it. I think had I handed her Xmen or Blade or some iconic characters she was in to then she would have took off and did better then me. There is scientific proof that women have better eyes for color details and hue's. So while guys are getting use to color relationships or just copying the progression, a girl can grasp that fairly quickly and can focus on brush control and other tricks. I hope you stick with the hobby.

The red glow in the eyes of Fimbul's warg is fantastic! Together with the drool it really brings the model to life.

Tim spent the evening working on his photography setup to try and improve the quality of photos. Here is an improved photo of Fimbul on the Warg, which I feel looks better than the white background. What do you think? :)

Photo is better, if anything a bit too much light exposure.

Should see my setup ;) it's awful haha. I generally just use auto settings and then tweak it all in photoshop but trying to go the other way of taking a good photo that requires very little editing.

I'll play around again later. Probably should get some better lamps...

The black background is nice, but at Gandlaf said there's too much exposure, which takes away details. You might want to try the "milk jar photobox", quite simple, but great results!

Yeah I've used several different methods, but I broke my photo booth when I moved stuff around and haven't got around to building another one yet... and then my mother broke two of my lamps hahaha. So now I'm down to one ottlite lamp that I try to diffuse with some bubble wrap ;)

I'll get some more lamps and bulbs ordered shortly I think and a permanent set up on a table somewhere in the office.

Maybe it's just Fimbul making the photo look bad ;-)

Here is a photo of my latest WIP, the Mirkwood Elf Rangers. So far I have started 4 of them to use as a warband in Battle Companies with Tim. Some shading, tidying up and finishing the bases left to do on these ones :)

Looking nice Amy, if I can say that !!!
Ok then, you are moving along quickly and my first request is to change your thread from beginner ! You are clearly past that.
So for the shading, are you planning on the faces ? Also are you to tackle the eyes ?

You've already nailed the hardest part of any kind of painting; being able to see.

Thank you! Yes, shading on face, hair and other places still to complete! I will try doing something with the eyes, left them till a new day for better lighting :)
