Thank you everyone for your comments! :)

Here are some finished photos of this weekend's work, the ten Palace Guard to join Thranduil. I spent most of Saturday experimenting with the scheme on one, I decided to paint them differently to the GW scheme by giving them red cloaks to match Thranduil. I finished them all today, and I am very happy with them. I'm also happy to have finished my first full army!

These look great Amy. The red cloaks look the business and I note some great contrast between the shade and highlights without going too light.
The overall look is almost sinister for an elf which I think is very fitting. Let's face it, elves are a supreme and ruthless fighting force.

I would be very happy to see those on my gaming table. Excellent work.

The red looks great on those. Gives me idea's to work with. I think they could do with a spot color, maybe even the same blue from Thranduil, but that is of course your choice. I know once a person says 'army complete' they tend not to want to put them back on the painting table, :) .

That does sound like a good idea Sithious, although not sure where to put that? I wanted colours that would go well with the gold you see so that's where the red/brown cloth came from :)

I am not sure looking at the models where to place a spot color either, well not without some free hand work. They look good anyway, I just thought it is something the force could use to break up all those colors that work well together, as you said, the red, brown and gold have a harmony. So perhaps just a wayward thought.

I agree with you, I think it would also link even more back to Thranduil! Gives me more to think about for future forces though, and if I do decide to re-do or add to these in the future I will definitely consider testing things out :)

Hi all, it's been a while since I've posted here. I've been super busy, graduated, got onto a new job, bought a new car, been on holiday etc! I haven't painted anything LOTR/Hobbit since the Palace Guard. I was enticed by the new Stormclaw boxset released for 40k, and I've been painting the Space Wolves from it. I have posted photos of my work in the other forum: viewtopic.php?f=99&p=375244#p375244 if anyone may be interested in seeing my painting on other models, any comments would be appreciated! When I'm done my half of the boxset, Tim is doing the Orks, I think I will come back to LOTR. I feel the experience has helped my skills, I feel like I'm beginning to get a better hang of faces, as the Space Wolf/Marine faces have great detail. Also I've been doing more cloaks, and I have understood how to blend, hopefully it comes across in my painting! :P

Today I began painting the first Hobbit mini I've done in over a month now, Gandalf the Grey from the Escape From Goblin Town set. I've been itching to paint the set so that we have a fully painted boxset, but I haven't felt confident enough to do the models justice and today I took that plunge!

I've been painting Warhammer 40k models, which you can see on the Warhammer project log forums if you like. Wow, the difference between painting LOTR/Hobbit minis compared to Warhammer is massive, they are so much smaller and I found it a little difficult to re-adjust to fine-tuning my skills again.

Here is a WIP shot of Gandalf, he is nearly done. Tim made some resin bases made out of the walkways from the boxset, and all of the dwarves and goblins are going to be on these bases, just the base left to do. What do you think? :)

A bit belated, but well done on graduating and the new job :)

Gandalf is well done, but its essential that you have very thin paints when you do him in any pose. It looks like it's caught you out in a few places like on his hems. I might be worthwhile to add 1 more highlight just picking out very small amounts of robe with a light colour. I did a Gandalf last month, so I know it can be hard to get good results - mine looks great until you get up close so I feel like re-doing it sometime. Maybe take pictures of bland-ish models like Gandalf and wraiths from a bit further away to catch more of the colour changes.

Anyway, well done, you'll pick it up again :)

Thanks! In all honesty I was using a tutorial for his cloak that I didn't feel right with. I am considering just re-doing his cloak all together as I'm not happy with some bits of it myself! I do thin the paints but I think sometimes it's more about watching how much paint is on the brush as I do sometimes find it pooling or too much running on, it's getting that consistency right really. Thanks for the tips!

I've begun painting the dwarves from the Escape from Goblin Town set, here are some photos of what I have done so far :) I'm quite happy with how Balin and Bombur came out, not so much with Gandalf and Thorin but maybe that's just me. What do you think? :)

Lovely work. I'm just about to paint some of the company myself. I hope I can get them looking half as good!

It is hard to believe that you aren't part of the hobby for a long time, you paint much better than I do! 8) Great detail on the faces and nice transitions on the clothes.

Those look really good. I am also painting these guys at the moment and the Thorin's Company miniatures have been a real treat because of how detailed they are.
