Thanks for all the comments guys - much appreciated. It is nice to finally have some time to paint and engage with the forum. I have decided to take on the Knight Model Boromir for the winter painting challenge. I have made some progress but lots more to do.

C & C's always welcome.

I am trying for a blue/black look to his coat. I still have a few folds to highlight blue. The paint is not behaving. I am really happy with the red/brown cloak, though more shades and highlights needed here too. Obviously, I still have the horn, sword hilt, shield, eyes etc etc to finish.

I don't like the shield and might try a darker metal colour. I want to try painting a gemstone as the centre piece to the shield, but haven't done that before. Will chase up DMS's WIP for some tips.

the cloak looks great, would like to see a close-up of Boromir's face.

Thanks. Still need to do more work on the face. The shading is not quite right. I'll post more pics as I make progress.

Use a thin dark blue around his jaw line if you want a slight stubble / unshaven look.

Looks very good, I like the face and cloak particularly.

Surprisingly no. I thought it would be really hard to paint such a large model well, but I'm finding it no more difficult than the 28mm models. In fact I am really enjoying this one since I can see all the detail rather than have to strain my eyes. I was dreading the large flowing cloak, but that has turned out to be the easiest to paint so far. I still want more contrast in this, but I haven't shaded yet. The blue/black coat has been most difficult, but that's just from getting the blending right.

Hopefully I'll get some time in the next few days to make more progress.

Twas the night before Christmas
And all through the house
Not a creature was stirring
Except a rabid painting mouse!

I finished the base for my 70mm Boromir who will adorn the painting challenge and any 70mm Christmas trees I stubble across. The first snows of winter. At the front of the base I wanted the impression of a muddy path leading to the rock where the big B will perch himself, so I mixed some water effects with sand and brown/black paint to make a shiny mud. It worked pretty well. Think it comes out in the photo?

Image

I also knocked off 3 Abrakhan Guard to go with my Golden King

Image

Here's the king

Image

And here's the gang looking for trouble

Image

And because it's Christmas I'll finish off with one of the jolly big fellow himself - have you been naughty or nice?

Image

Happy holiday season to all! :puppy:

Wonderful Xmas bundle. Boromir base is excellent, I'd love to have a go at that figure.

Thanks GTG.

I've made some progress on Boromir. Very close to finishing now - just have to paint and attach his sword hand and paint the gemstone in the middle of his shield. I can't see any major stuff ups in the pics below, but if you spot any let me know. I splashed a bit of 'mud' on his boots and the bottom of his tunic, cape etc - but didn't go overboard with this.

It's nice to have him almost done.

Close up of his face. Just highlights my sketchy painting - one spot was particularly hard to fix so I'm just calling that a battle scar!

Well he's finished for now. I could go on with little highlights forever I think. Pretty happy with the end result given this is my first time painting anything other than 28mm scale. Might be worth getting Aragorn now :)

My first time painting a gemstone. Looks better in the photo than real life. I should follow painting guides more often! Pity the light through the window disrupts the effect. Also only about 2nd time trying NMM (on the sword). Not a big fan of this style.

Despite your best efforts to put yourself down I think you've done a great job with this. It is not easy to transport 28mm painting onto a bigger figure. This is your first try at something like this and the last thing you should be is in any way unhappy.
Getting to grips with things like glazing will help future projects.
The jewel looks good for a first effort, very good in fact.
NMM can be excellent but does need a lot of practise, the transition for dark to light needs to be extreme to really pull it off.
Overall, great job mate.

Thanks for the supportive comments. Really appreciate it. I was actually pretty happy with the end result. I think I learned a lot of new things about painting through tackling the larger scale - and hopefully this will help with future 28mm figures.

I have entered the Dec-July diorama challenge and my entry will be titled 'Gondor vs. Gorgoroth!' - the centrepiece of which will be a great beast rampaging through Osgiliath confronted by a brave band of Gondor's finest.

It seems fool hardy to have entered this challenge since I am lucky to paint 1 mini a month. However, with the aid of performance enhancing seed cake sourced from a shady looking hobbit who I met at the Green Dragon - I have actually managed to almost finish at least the majority of the opposing forces. I am yet to paint the booties on the orcs and I need to do some more highlighting here and there (especially the cloak of the Gondor captain). I would also like to add more characters to the diorama, but I think I now need to start working on the actual scenery in case I run out of time. Oh yeah, and I need to paint the beast too!

Lots of pics below. C&C always welcome.

Nice start to a big project. Is the howdah loose ? I hope so to make the beasts hide a bit easier to paint.
Captains cloak does need some highlighting but all round good solid work?
