Loving that head. Paintbrush or airbrush?

Paintbrush. I primed black, then basecoated with GW Mournfang Brown, Mephiston Red and Zandri Dust. Then started painting! I don't use airbrushes. Dont have enough practice with them to try on this model... Maybe one day. For now, brushes.

Stunning work. I want the model, but honestly I don't think I could bring myself to paint it.

Awesome. Looking at your previous work and comparing, I could be wrong but it looks like you have taken much more care in painting Smaug. The head looks fantastic.

Enough said above to say how good this is looking. You are adopting a system I'm considering of dry fitting everything then painting up before sticking together, hope it works out ok with the joins.

I'm rather interested to know what the process of assembly will be. Clearly you've started painting all the components before attaching the wings and head, so when it comes to attaching them, what will you do? Put them together and fill then repaint the join? That's how I'd do it, but I'd worry that the colour wouldn't match exactly when painting the join.

Smaug looks fantastic so far. I can't wait to see him done!

I've gone and bought a new shelf to put Smaug on when I buy one.

Looking very nice.
However, I think you can go darker between the scales. Not all over but in places to create some depth. Add to this some touches of highlight on the top most scales.
At the moment, as good as it is, I think the red scales are a touch flat.
Chuck on some dark glazes of blue, purple green on the scales in areas were they will be shaded.
You will find that it's not so much the highlighting but the shading that will deepen the look.
Love that eye.
