I think Oldman Willow's bang on the money, I think it's Girion defending Dale, if you look at the surroundings and the next shot it looks like a stone city being destroyed, definitely not Laketown. If you look around him there's a bunch of dead Dale warriors who wouldn't be there during the time-scale of the movies. What's intriguing is that PJ said we'd see that in the prologue of the extended AUJ so I'm curious to see if it's been moved to DOS or if it's a second sequence that builds on the one in the prologue.
As for whether or not a Ballista will kill Smaug I strongly doubt it. However much PJ might change the journey, he rarely changes the major beats of the story,
Book spoiler!
I'm 99% sure Bard'll kill Smaug as he does in the books
The one thing I think he will change is the idea that there are black arrows rather than 1 black arrow. Not sure quite how this will work but I presume they'll be arrow tips made out of Obsidian or something so they pierce the hide of the dragon. Again, for my money, this makes far more sense, the Laketowners having access to hide-piercing arrows rather than a talking thrush that gives away his weakness.
Having watched it a whole bunch of times over the last few days I must say I absolutely love the trailer. The balance of elves/men/dwarves/hobbit is much better in this one and the CGI looks far better (the spiders look fantastic). I think this movie will be remembered as the best of the three and is going to feature the best set pieces of the trilogy. I know some people won't agree but I'm all up for Leggy and Tauriel expanding the Wood Elf section and the shots of Leggy swinging down the web after the spider and Tauriel spinning around firing surrounded by spiders are amongst my favourites in the trailer.
I find the shot of the army of orcs really intriguing, can't wait to see how that fits in, I'm guessing it's the orcs massing towards the end to march on the Lonely Mountain in film 3 rather than a huge battle in film 2 but I could be wrong. The only thing I'm worried about is that there's been absolutely no publicity stuff of Bolg. I hope he hasn't been written out entirely as part of the Azog introduction as he was such a cool design and I'd like the awesome mini to be used in some cool scenarios. My hope is that he was always meant to be Dol Guldor's Castellan so we shouldn't have seen him but he was such a big part of the first film's (pre-trilogy) marketing campaign that it's odd to see him disappear entirely.
Overall though I'm really happy, so excited for December now both in terms of the movie and the miniature range. Can't believe this considering how hyped I was last year but I think I'm even more excited about this movie!
