Personally I like the idea of their role being more than sitting on their bottoms whilst Bilbo does the hard graft, particularly if it results in more gaming options such as dwarf siege contraptions!

Just my opinion though, as Imrail says we shall see come December!

My thought's exactly. I wouldn't like "zombies" introduced to middle-earth, especially an undead orc-army... that sounds more like Warcraft-stuff (which I kinda liked in Warcraft III) but yeah, please don't mix it up! ^^

[quote="Azog"]There are two Middle Earth's - the PJ One of the films and the one of the books. I don't see a reason why we can't have and enjoy both :-)

I have to say that I agree. The book is open to much imagination and interpretation, and also Peter Jackson is a film maker and has literally to provide us with a vision.

As always, way more excited for potential miniatures than the movie itself, but I'm still really looking forward to the film. Everything I've seen so far suggests it'll be fun as hell.

Whatever may happen in this film, I can't wait. Knowing how PJ goes about his action sequences will make for something spectacular and a very nice premise to the battle of the five armies - that one will be something else.

I am particularly looking forward to seeing and playing this, even though it will mean buying (ouch!) and painting a new tooled up dwarf company!

I know purists might object - but it was always said that LOTR could never be filmed and it wasn't. Instead we had a version of events that unfolded in LOTR that worked well as a set of movies. The Hobbit will be no different and with the extra necromancer angle it adds a whole new level to the story.

Looking forward to Xmas :-)

Wonderful post, couldn't agree more, deviations within the film in no way devalue the book, it's just great to finally have an epic big screen version of this story.

Roll on December!

This all sets up for a rather perfect "down ending" for part two.

Off in film theory land, the three act model demands that act two always ends on a down note. (If you want a happy ending, that is. It's the other way around if you want a tragedy).

How do you come up with a good dramatic down ending that also follows the story in the book, fits middle earth and works as a christmas blockbuster.

Big battle. The dragon is driven from Erebor, but turns on Laketown in his rage. Thorin leads his victorious kin (also, one Hobbit) into the centre of the mountain, taking his throne as king.

...of a ruined city, a ruined throne, a ruined people with Laketown burning downriver.

Thorin will have achieved his destiny, to become king under the mountain, but he's basically gone bad at that point. He's become this greedy, ruthless dwarf king of old, more concerned with pride and his feuds than with the better things in life.

It also gives the various dwarves a set of dilemmas and conflicting loyalties which makes their defence of their king at the later Battle of the Five Armies all the more poignant. It also offers Thorin a final redemption.

But it leave the story with a sense of closure (to keep us occupied for a year) and with a cliffhanger.

Edit: Looking forward to this Azog + Bolg relationship. It'd be nice if Azog wasn't CGI'd though...

I would still love to see Glorfindel in one movie or another, even if it's a small role, Perhaps in the siege of Dol Guldur

Another crime against context, taking on a dragon in a cave is no mean feat, unlike throwing yourself and a balrog of a cliff out of desperation

bane of balrogs = gravity
simple Newtonian physics there

As for the trailer, seems rather entertaining, not being the bigest fan of the AUJ film I hope this one will be more pleasing to me.

He's probably too busy playing fantasy games with Cirdan and Erestor where they take the roles of accountants, I.T. professionals and bankers in a mundane world of every day business, and no doubt has a back log of miniature web analysts to paint!

I am both offended and severely disappointed that any of you doubt Glorf's ability to slay a dragon :(

Sarcasm

I hope your not referring to Glorfy throwing a barog off a cliff to beat a barog, like the way your sentence is worded... Since he was slaying him before the barog fell off and took him with it...
