Has anyone heard that this years Desolation of Smaug box set has been canceled or delayed because the Dragon model was rejected?

Aaaaaaawwwwwww
I've been waiting for this set for ages
But why would they include the dragon in the box set?
I always thought it would be more of a mumakil type of set?

Haven't heard a thing, and I don't mean to be rude but I find that quite hard to believe. It would be far more helpful if you provided some kind of source to back up your claim.

I find this hard to believe mainly because GW wouldn't put a big kit like smaug in a starter box.
Nope, I'm calling hoax on this one.

I'm doubtful, primarily because I fully expect Smaug to cost the same or more as the Starter set on his own, and be a fairly complex kit, whilst the Starter has to have two sides(that can play a variety of intro scenarios) and be fairly simple to construct. Having one side consist of a single massive dragon is going to work poorly in this regard, and would be a mistake even if they did do it, imo.

I could see the Smaug release itself being delayed maybe, if it wasn't up to snuff. Even so I'm not sure where you heard this rumor, since I've not seen it anywhere on the net.

Smaug in a box starter set?

A starter set is supposed to provide you with the basics to play the game. Smaug ain't the best choice for that.

But you were rude. It was a question not a claim.

I looked last night but did not see it. Then I looked here.

I would think so too. But I was at a plastic model meeting my source would not have known about that or cared. We were discussing injection molding.
It seems unlikely that a kit would be rejected at this stage by the licensee unless something's very wrong.

I was afraid the Dragon would be produced in Fine Cast. I was hoping for for a separate injection model kit too.

No, it is an unsubstantiated rumor. A hoax is fraud with the intent to deceive. Declaring a hoax based on an opion is a baseless allegation of fraud. Let's be more careful with our word usage. This is how this kind of thing gets out of hand. I did not make a claim this is true. I am trying to chase down a rumor. Opinions are not facts. Let us see if we can find some facts.

All we have now is a rumor from the club meeting and a post I have not seen yet on DakaDaka.
So if any one sees something else let us all know.

I would have thought the design for smaug would have been nailed a long time ago.
Also I think as a starter kit maybe elves or men of laketown vs goblins/orcs would much better suit a "starter" set but........
The hobbit starter set had all the dwarves, radagast, goblin king and scribe included, all with special rules. Not really newbie friendly so I'm ruling nothing out.

I agree completely.

I have indeed seen this rumour (no one, firm source just from browsing the various forums over the last week) and some others that don't bode brilliantly for us.

Firstly to the Smaug rumour, I agree with the majority here, I don't think Smaug would have been in the starter set, I don't even think he would have been released in December so I doubt there's been much of an impact from that angle. It is perfectly possible that the license holders have sent the design back and delayed the Smaug model's release date but it shouldn't impact too much on what I imagine would have been in the first wave: elves, orcs, spiders etc.

However, there's a lot of other stuff going on that I find far more worrying - Last year when all the Hobbit stuff was released at the end of November there was very little released for 40K or Fantasy, the vast majority of the month's releases and White Dwarf coverage was, for once, devoted to the Hobbit.

However, this year there are two expansions for 40K and 1 for Fantasy all rumoured for release in December, demonstrating that, perhaps understandably, GW are no longer confident enough in the Hobbit range to support the month on its own.

What's far more worrying is that it's now been all but confirmed by various rumour sites that Tyranids for 40K are now being released in December. These have long been rumoured for January and this kind of last minute change up is fairly unprecedented for army releases for the two major systems. This certainly implies that, for whatever reason, in the last few weeks there has been a major shake-up in the release schedule for December.

Quite what this means for the Hobbit I don't know but I struggle to see how much attention we're going to get in a month where there are 3 expansions and a brand new army/codex for the other 2 systems.

It could be nothing and as always you have to take all these rumours with a pinch of salt but I must admit, in the last week I've gone from being ridiculously excited about seeing the new White Dwarf to really, really worried about what might lie in store for the future of the Hobbit range...

We shall see in 21 days, keep everything crossed folks.

My assumption on the codex updates are in part pushed forward to December to make Christmas for additional sales

It'll be funny if they release something for each system at Christmas. The white dwarf would probably be 300 pages long with a £10.50 price tag.

Don't go giving them any ideas. In a few months time that could be the price.
