Great news, Weta have announced Book 6 of the Chronicles series "The Art of War" out at the beginning of November. If anyone hasn't seen them they are well worth getting, full of background info, drawings and pictures.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is in these that isn't in the extended edition special features?

There is a series of books called "The Art of" for the LOTR movies. JRR Tolkien had already used that title for the Hobbit. This series is called Chronicles instead.
How is it different? Besides the obvious it is a book  Seriously they make very good painting guides and references. There are lots of drawings and concepts that never made the film/DVD.There are many details photos of costumes and props you will never be able to find viewing the DVDs.

Fully agree with you Charles, the depth of all the Chronicles and Art books is massive, you also get interviews with set makers, costume designers, artists to name a few. The drawings themselves are works of art. The dvd extras are great but the books are a whole different level of detail.

Yeah, they're certainly worth getting! For each film, there are two Chronicles books, an art book for each (the best ones to get it you can't get all of them)

AUJ:
1- Art and Design
2- Creatures and Characters (details on mo-cap, prosthetics, aesthetic deign work)

DOS:
3- Art and Design
Smaug: Unleashing the Dragon (not part of the Chronicles series, but well worth having)
4- Cloaks and Daggers (prop design)

BotFA:
5- Art and Design (in my opinion, the best of the lot, especially as reference for painting minis!)
6- The Art of War (large-scale effects, weapon work ect)
