And seems like the new rulebook is coming out alongside as per usual Box Set fashion!

This is amazing news! I cannot wait to hear even more on this in the coming months and I'm sure the content of the set will be amazing if the newly announced releases are anything to go by!

So, judging by the name... probably Mordor vs Rohan? I could get behind that...

(alternate options might be Harad or Minas Tirith... though I think Rohan and Mordor seem more likely as the big two.)

I was thinking maybe 3 hunters + something vs Mordor, in keeping with all the starter set's theme of a company of heroes.

That is actually a really interesting idea, could even be the three hunters + some undead vs a warband of Haradrim and a warband of mordor??? That would make the most sense for me from a cinematic perspective. I'm just super hyped we are getting anything like this in the first place. I will be buying it even if I don't need any of the models it comes with. :-D

I am thinking they will take the chance to make a new Eomer model, the currently available mounted one is a bit poor.

I reckon it will be focussed on the Fiefdoms. We have already seen some of the new Dol Amroth figures and Hurin the Tall. Hurin rode out with them along with Imrahil, Forlong and Hirluin.

Wait...what? I don't see anything like that in the official announcement. Did anyone attend the LoTR info session and hear first hand what was announced? I'm curious; we always get the best news at these events from Adam Troke &co. I'm going to board the hype train at the next station. Until then, it's back to Frostgrave.

I also missed it the first time I read it, but the title is "An Unexpected Boxed Set". :)

@GreatKhanArtist....straight from the Warhammer Community page a couple days ago....

An Unexpected Boxed Set

"...And that’s not all. Over the last few years, gaming in Middle-earth has seen something of a renaissance. With Forge World having vastly expanded the world of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey™ Strategy Battle Game with a range of models, gaming events across the world consistently drawing considerable crowds and Battle Companies allowing players to fight epic campaigns with only a handful of models, the Middle-earth Team have decided it’s finally time to release something big – and the Battle of Pelennor Fields is just the start. Watch this space for further announcements…"

Undoubtedly, they are going to replace the "Escape from Goblin Town" starter set with a new one based on Pellenor Fields. So the unexpected box set may be a Hobbit themed set for those still interested in that story.

Okay, yes, I do share your enthusiasm all, to be sure, but I'm not seeing "new boxed set" in that announcement. I am hopeful we are getting a new boxed set 'cause the stars are right &such, but a "big" announcement might be a mumak resculpt or something else super awesome, like the walls of Minas Tirith being rereleased. Not too much of a stretch, really, considering Weathertop was recently reoffered. I'm hoping for a rearing mumak with its trunk saluting a death befitting any warrior of Men!

Let the speculating begin! Huzzah!

ps. I think you can guess what my political leanings are too: conservative.

I think it's definitely a new boxed set starter pack ... the headline on the Warhammer Community page was "An unexpected box set" so the news was in the headline, rather than the quote that just mentions "something big".

I reckon it will be a starter set with rule book and two starter armies (maybe Minas Tirith/Rohan vs Orcs/Easterlings) using mostly older plastic models and if we're lucky maybe some new plastic heroes or captains.

Pelennor fields maybe could be a campaign book with some new characters and profiles. I reckon they'll then keep producing regular campaign books for various major battles over coming years, each with some new scenarios, some new models, maybe some revised model rules for older figures.

Probably this will gradually revise/invalidate the older source books step-by-step over a number of years. (Although I'd quite like one giant index book!)

The above is mostly guesswork. But I don't think the new Forge World models of the fiefdoms stuff (resin) would be in the new box set, as starter sets are normally plastic.
