Now that I'm painting to a decent standard, I'd like to Varnish my miniatures (with the added bonus of sealing the static grass on the bases!) DMS recommended Vallejo for a paint on one (which I'm grateful for) but I was wanting to get a spray on one for ease of use and overall even coat. What do people use? Can you make any recommendations? |

Talking from my own personal experience only , I have never found a spray matt varnish that i was happy with the results. Often end up with white chalky appearence. Will be interested in what you guys suggest here |

Yeah? Well I'm not one to shun good advice so I'll keep that in mind! Might end up going for a paint on one instead... |

Since I'm not a gamer I forego the varnish completely. Any time I've used it in the past it always has a gloss effect (I've only used paint on GW varnish, Testers matte varnish, and GW spray varnish) . . . So in wise words onces spoken, "I don't always use varnish, but when I do I use a very thin coat of paint on varnish." |

Back when it was easier to find I was a big fan of Testors Dull Coat (still am!), but it was applied with a brush. It would go dull even over the most uber glossy coat of GW gloss in minutes. Awesome stuff. Now I use Krilon Matte Varnish spray. Its nice and never gave me any problems, really. Plus, its cheap and I can get it at any DYI store around here, next to the automotive spray paints. |

Here in Australia i use Westart Picture Varnish Matt- made in Oz by a company in Western australia better than GW, but still important to shake well and not use when conditions damp or humid to avoid the white spotting/cracking, has happened to me unsure if available o/seas but works well on both oils and acrylic paints, comes in white/tan aerosol tin 400g net |

Fanatic army painter matt spray is good but very weather dependent. In winter you spray on the patio and quickly throw them inside to stop frosting/dusting effects... in summer you do exactly the same because last time water n cold were doing it in, this time sunlight etc does it in. Also never spray the first spray of the day on the models. |

I've had too many models ruined by spray on varnish. I too use the brush on Vallejo. It doesn't take much time to apply a coat with a medium sized brush. Plus if you want to leave metallics areas shiny you have the option to not apply it wherever it isn't required. |

Just use some masking tape, masking fluid or just blutac to cover those areas. Just takes a couple more minutes to do. |

Sounds like a lot more work to me, plus I would be worried about the tape/bluetac pulling the paint off the mini. |

Precisely what I was thinking. |

I find that the rush on stuff kills my brain cells too quickly, which I can't afford to do at my tender old age anymore So, I hold my breath and spray outside! My absolute favourite spray-on matte top coat is Kryon's matte finish spray. For me the stuff works better than dullcote from Testors ever did. The problem with matte varnish/coats though is that they do not actually protect the figure. For that, you first need to put on a coat of one of the glossier ones. Here's the procedure I use: [*]Spray satin or glossy protective top coat on first, apply thin layers; one layer is usually fine, but if you add more, wait until the first layer is very dry, i.e. a few hours in the hot sun or longer in the garage. [*]My favourite for the protective top coat is varathane satin spray top coat. I once left miniature outside all night in the rain after spraying them with this stuff, and although the basing material have washed away, the figures - and even their paper banners!!!! - were in perfect condition! [*]Let the figures dry for 24 hours after the protective coat goes on. Spraying the matte too early will mix the two and you won't get a matte finish ever. Also, if you left your figs out in the rain, wait an additional 24 hours to let them dry again [*]Spray a light coat of Krylon matte finish on all sides of the figure. Wait for it to dry, which shouldn't take long since it was a light coat. [*]If it's a little glossy still, do one more light coat. After that, another coat will start to mute the colours and make the figure look dusty. That's it! Hope that helps neldoreth |
