Just wondered if many here use an airbrush at all to paint LOTR or Hobbit miniatures? I am thinking of buying one, but wondered if the LOTR and Hobbit miniatures are too small to really be of any benefit. Any help would be appreciated x

I'd say an airbrush work well on large models such as 40k tanks, and the likes of space marines, because they need 1 main color, winged Wraiths, and Balrogs/drakes could do well. But I'd say LOTR models have too much small detail, need multiple colors and are smaller in general to be airbrushes effectively. Just my opinion.

Maybe with GW going towards a multiparty model sprue an airbrush could be used to base coat before assembly. I have been tempted, mainly before army painter came out with more primer colors, to invest in a good airbrush. I am less inclined now, army painter colored primers do help to get the troops done but takes more to get good coverage and I feel they are not as smooth as other primers.

Hi, i use an airbrush alot, but on small figure just for undercoating, you can get a very thin film of paint, using Vallejo paints, and a good choice of different colours.

for instance brown is a brilliant undercoat, also dark grey.

for fine detail its no good, for large areas, scenery for example its brilliant.

I use a Iwata Eclipse HP-CS, well recommended.

Have you ever used any of the Vallejo surface primers through the airbrush? I have brushed them on and they are brilliant and they come in multiple colors.

Yes I only use Valley one primers through my air brush, they work brilliantly and stick really well to resin

Harfoot - wow, that's a serious piece of kit you've got. I am considering an airbrush for undercoating and sealing but I was thinking along the lines of the GW one or similar as it will be purely for these type of jobs.

It is a good one, i paint alot of Tamiya type models as well, which is the main purpose, its a bit over engineered for just base coating i must admit!

Check out Buypainted or Schnauzerfaceminis on YouTube for some great tips on how to use an airbrush to paint 28mm minis. They are both really informative and fun channels. I like to paint with their vids playing in the background.
