I've just checked out the members listing here at OR like I do every few times a year. I'm in the top 30 post count, woohoo! Makes me wonder if I would get a lot more done using my time to paint rather than being here, but I love it here anyways. I'm amazed at how GothmogTheWerewolf shot up to Elven Elder in just over a year! Very dedicated member. Other funny things & useless facts: "The OneRing Community" (member) is officially the first member since 1969 (???) when the forum board has been created Jan. 8th 2004. [sarcasm]No of course not, no hacking going on at all...[/sarcasm] Funny enough Dagorlad isn't the first board member despite being the creator, he's third or 4th if you include Mr. 1969 mentioned before. The members before him are Silvertiggie and Silverscott, both of whom are wayfarers with little to no posts, but one visited in 2010 to drop a line since doing so in 2004. I remember being part of a general Lotr site "Middle-Earth-Centre" that had it's own tiny miniature group, then I found this site and told the group about it, only samoht came along, the rest of the group was pretty much inactive anyway. So now I'm a "few" posts away from Loremaster, but the coin system is coming back soon yay so I'll probably be demoted back down to Wayfarer along with everyone else. Who else is excited about that? I am glad coin is coming back, took me a month to figure out that you purchase adventure gear icons with them when I first joined! I want to suggest to Dago to give us a handful of coins for our personal join date anniversary and/or everytime we reach a posting limit at intervals, not everyone here can write meaningful articles to earn coins and advance in title. I hope BilboOfTheWhiteTower is given an honorary title or the cap title straight away when we convert. Anyone else here ever took the time to check out the member's list? And what has been your OR experience since coming here, etc? |

I have not been here long in comparison to some of you guys but do read through the members list from time to time. Makes you realise just how many members we have here . Lookin at all the names Isee people who were active when i first joined and aren't so much anymore. Its good to remember those people that helped me out in the beginning. With regards to the gold coins I have never known the gold coin system as it was already gone when i joined. What I do know gold coins will be rewarded for many things not solely for mambers who write articles. Challenge winners maybe , members who are helpful etc. Everyone will have chance to earn coins (apart from you Jordan - you deserve to stay a wayfarer for calling me old ) |

Actually, Gordon aka Silverscott was the original creator of the site back in 2004, not Daggy. The site was very basic, but the generic ideas were already very much the same as now. Alan and Brian (DurinsBane) took over soon after when Silverscott and Silvertiggie pretty much gave up the whole thing. The current guidelines of the forums that you can find in the stickies all over, is still the post Tiggie did back in 2004, even if it (slightly) changed. We have been growing steadily since. Also, the number of posts (or members) you see in that list doesnt mean much and really does not reflect the complete contribution of members in the site. We do clean the database every now and then, deleting non active members and really old posts. Otherwise we would have a much much higher number of members and the post count would be very different. We never cared much for the post accounts, and the current ranks system (based in post numbers) is just the generic one that comes with the software. The future system will be similar (but not the same) to the one we used to have with the gold coins and inventory items. You earn them contributing to the site somehow (articles, competitions, etc), there will be more details from Dag when he gets the whole thing ready to be implemented. I like the idea of honorary titles and the bday and/or join date present though. |

Wow I just got a dose of One-Ring history lesson, hehe. Thanks Mac. So now it makes sense that the Silvers are head of the line! Time to pull a nerdy Silmarillion reference; Scott & Tiggie are Eru Iluvatar, Dag is Manwe, the rest of the admins are Varda. Mac, since you and a few others are admins, do you help Dag in the designing and programming of this site or is Dag alone on that? How do the admins differ from the mods? Thanks again if you reply. I remember when first joining this forum it was different from others in the way you earned your ranking. And it made sense, you gain more "prestige" by contributing something more than just "+1" posts. Certainly makes OR unique and gives rank titles more value. But yeah rank titles are all for fun in general on message boards, it's a nice way of showing off veterancy, although ultimately these web titles mean nothing in our lives beyond the cpu monitor (it's not something I can put down on my Resume as an achievement). I wouldn't say number of posts of a member are meaningless to a Web board community, an active posting member puts forward more... well, activity to the boards and usually pushes topics along. But I also understand the idea that a member who post a gazillion posts doesn't mean he/she is the most contributing member here to the site. That's how I see gold coins add weight to a ranking system. Anyway I miss the inventory items, it's like you guys built an rpg system into the boards, awesome idea |

It there was a 'view thread' I'd be much higher. Or if the WoTR thread was busier. We have great group of people here for sure and to be respected for their contributions. I've read some mile long threads... much appreciated! |

Quote: And it made sense, you gain more "prestige" by contributing something more than just "+1" posts +1! Just before reading this topic tonight I was thinking that OneRing is probably the most visited site on my browser. I was reading the forums for about a year before I decided to join. I had posted a single question with another username before but I found myself visiting very often and reading through the forums. So then I joined wholeheartedly with my current account. I want to say thank you to the community. Although I don't post any pictures or contribute with any articles ( don't know why but my camera really devalues my painting, don't worry I'll soon give it another shot plus I have a bunch of coking recipes I am eager to share) I feel this community as a group of friends. I hardly know anyone here but once again Thank You guys and girls. I know that if I am feeling blue I can always drop a line in the Chat and people will instantly try to cheer me up. Admins thank you too for creating this site, it's a sanctuary from everyday worries! |

Well, all the hard coding and design are done by Dagorlad. We all have to be thankfull for all the hard work and time he dedicates to make this wonderfull place so pretty and functional. He's been doing it since 2004 I believe, and just keeps getting better. Next time we get hacked he's probably gonna make us some holographic menus and a 3D gallery. lol All the rest of the team helps by giving feedback on what we like/dislike, features that we'd like to see implemented, that sort of thing. We tend to take decisions as a group and we like how that works. That goes for pretty much everything we do (from what articles to publish or not, any issues with members, etc.). In theory admins have the final word in case of any (extremely rare) disagreements, Daggy being the lead. Besides that, mods are all a lot less better looking than admins. Admins can also ban mods for sneaky editing admin posts... Obviously. Sneaky EDIT by DMS see if you can spot it Not so sneaky EDIT by MacG see if you can spot it |

It's a really funny thing to look through, I don't know why. And also a strange feeling to suddenly realise how few people I actually "know" around here, even if I like to think otherwise. Who are all the members with 0 posts? |

Should you really care? I like those members who sign up, but only stay behind the scenes until one day after a few years they've decided to post something because they couldn't stay silent on a certain topic!
