Back in 80's, a Finnish theater group performed the Lord of the Rings, and later also turned the play into a TV series. Their budget was a little lower than Jackson's, but they stayed quite loyal to Tolkien.

Sorry, can't help there. Hunt for Gollum might make a fun scenario though, Aragorn and maybe some wood elves attempting to catch their elusive prey. And the follow-up, orcs rescuing him from the tree he climbed to annoy his captors.
