Hey folks, well I'm really into my medieval films and think they beat any other films hands down. I've wanted to create a list where people can add more films that they have found that maybe others haven't discovered. So I'll start with what I have so far, and anymore suggestions I'll add on and can even have a watch myself! The list doesn't have to be strictly accurate so medieval/fantasy (a good example it lotr)

what about Pathfinder? It's about vikings so I guess it'll fit well here (:

The Vikings is pretty old, but still really good.
Beowulf is pretty good (though a bit gratuitously gross IMHO).
Dragonheart used some of the first good CG. It wavers between corny and dark. You might even recognize the evil prince, who plays Lupin in the Harry Potter series.

More a mini-series (two parts but one DVD) than a film but I recommend 1066: The Battle for Middle Earth, which is the story of England in that year, with Viking and Norman Invasions. It covers the battles of Fulford, Stamford Bridge and Senlac Hill (Hastings) plus has some interesting looks at Saxon village life. Many of the battle scenes were apparently conducted by re-enactment groups but they had to slow things down for the cameras.

Would we count the last samurai? thats just in hte middle of the 1800s! If you count that then you would count things like Napoleon or the patriot.

@typhoon2: I'll have a look at that 1066 thing, sounds rather interesting. I have a feeling I may have seen a few clips actually. Wasn't it more of a documentary?

@Sticky Fingersss: Yeah I realized that 'The Last Samurai' is a little bit of a stretch but I thought I might chuck it up their since it's mostly based on the Samurai and their way of life. Although there are muskets and all, the rest is historical with the swords etc etc

One of my favorites is Ivanhoe; a 1997 BBC/A&E Television Networks co-production for television starring Steven Waddington as Ivanhoe. I looked it up on Wikipedia, and John Rhys-Davies is in the 1982 version, which I haven't seen yet but would be cool.

The 1st thing that isn't on your list would be 1066: Battle for Middle-earth, but someone's already mentioned it. Legend of the Seeker (2 series) is a medieval fantasy, as is In the Name of the King. There's also another one or two which I'll post as soon as I remember them, but I can't recall them now.

Excalibur (not strictly medieval historic but is based on Thomas Malory)

Braveheart (not for the historical accuracy)

Right gotcha, I've added a few more and most of the ones you've suggested. I don't want to go too far back into the old ones because there are too many and they get rather cheesy.

Am I to understand that you think Ivanhoe is "too far back"? The BBC version I mentioned was made in the late 90's and is set in the time of Richard the Lion-Hearted and Robin Hood, which I saw you added as well.

Ah okay I poped it up, I could only find the 1952 and 1982 versions but no worries.

There can only be one.....filme missing from that list: Highlander!

Would you guys class it as a medieval film or not? (Btw im aware of how awful it is, i actually broke the disc after watching it i was so disappointed in it)

I did not think it was that bad. :rofl:

However, I grew up with B/W B movies.

I remember one with Tony Curtis and his Wife I liked when I was ten that I do not think you would want to watch.

Both featuring Charlton Heston. They were made on an epic scale, in the days before CGI allowed thousands of figures and other effects to be added.

when you see the trailers you expect very little story and a lot of fighting, but the story is actually very good. (not as good as the books but it get's close)

both movies are swedish, but from time to time you can find the first movie on youtube with english subtitles (there are no official subtitles)

I found the book quite an interesting read aswell, because the author really knows how to make this world come alive
