Just curious what people think Personally i have... lets see... 7, spread over all of the game systems (Fantasy. 40k, LOTR) Thing is though, in my 40k and lotr armies i dont seem to collect all the minis - I did in Fantasy, (i have enough minis for about 2k dark elves, and 1k wood elves). But in 40k & Lotr i tend to buy a hero, and a unit i like, then use stand-ins... Anything wrong with that? Reason i ask is because in LOTR SBG, i was considering getting a small 300pt good force (only do Mordor & Isengard currently). Cheers! |

Weigh your collection against this: One of my many money earning activities is making 1/1250 scale model ships for collectors. Some of these guys have 6000+ ships in their collection and the things cost about an average of £60 each. Their houses are like musuems and their bank balances make Smaug's horde of treasure look like a smashed piggy bank. 'nuff said. Will. |

Well, I have only started collecting miniatures from two systems at the moment. However, I am collecting almost every army for SBG, enough for 1k+ points matches for most of them, and have around 200 soldiers from Perry Miniatures' Samurai armies range, so I have no shortage of models. I don't think it really matters how many ranges you collect from, so long as you enjoy it and have the money and time to do it. Unfortunately, my backlog is so large now it will probably take the rest of my life to finish it, so I have decided not to make any more purchases in the forseeable future. This is a real shame though, as I really wanted to start collecting Napoleonics... Edit: If you are interested, my armies are: Isengard, High Elves (small), Dwarves, Gondor, Mordor, Rohan, Harad/Khand (small), Moria (small), and a large army of historical Japanese miniatures (9 armies in total). For SBG, whatever I don't have, my brother does, so between us we have everything. |

That would be me, really. When you find whole armies you do not remember buying, then it has gone just a wee bit too far. |

I think Dorth has a good point, I think that if you can sum up what you have (just a general overview) it's not too much. If you find thing and wonder if you have a nightly tendency to spend money buying and painting miniature figures, you've crossed the line. |

I agree with Dorth and Joansean. @ Eorling, that is really cool. I'd like to see some of your work. |

I think this really depends on how much time you're spending on the hobby. I've know people with tons of armies, tons of models (filling up rooms) but these were gained and worked on for years and years - I don't consider this type of thing 'too much' as in their day-to-day lives they didn't spend most of their time on hobby-related activities. Are you spending an hour every day on the hobby (including websites, stores, painting, etc)? 2? 3? The only time it's 'too much' is when it interferes with other aspects of your daily life (like if you spend too much money on it, don't spend any time doing other things, or let your relationships with real people suffer for your relationships with mini-people). I wouldn't worry about the number of models - I would worry about the amount of time, money, etc. |

I seem to be a bit different in that I don't collect miniatures as armies. I started in the days before LoME, so you could use anything with anything, so I just bought what I liked! I recently got back into the hobby, to find that I have what you might call armies of Gondor, Rohan, Mordor, Isengard, and Harad. |

Just like me, I have models I like, want etc etc. I mean when I first started, my first 2 sets were WoMT and WoTLA!!! 2 completely different ages, let alone army! |

Well I've been collecting LotR minis for six or seven years now and started when my son was just two years old. I've spent more than a couple of grand in that time, amassing armies for all factions so that once he got old enough to play with we would have all bases covered. The irony is now he is showing interest in the hobby but prefers 40k, and has an ultramarine and Ork army of his own. |

My nephew came to stay with me while his mother was deployed. He was not interested in LOTR at all. The only thing he liked was role playing Star Wars. Then he found Battle for Middle Earth and LOTR on line. Before long he had watched all of the movies and the Cartoons and was correcting my LOTR pronunciation. He even built three boats and a bridge for the Final Invasion in the Return of the King. I saved the boats for him to finish when he visits again. You have to many armies when the wont fit in the house. |

I have only Rivendell and Mordor. Not a lot but then again, I don't have loads of cash. I think too many models is when you can't be bothered to finish painting, basing etc. not because of exams and such but just because you don't want to. BTW, @Old Man Willow, nice avatar! |

The old Man Willow model is based on the Hildebandt Painting ,1976, and was produced in the 1980's. I added the base and the foliage extension some time later because it was so small. Over 30 years Army's can get kinda big. |

Too many armies is when you buy a second house just to store them in it. Or is it when you realise how much time you've spent on the hobby/ I'm a LotR veteran so I do have 3 armies (2 competive and 1 casual) but at the same time I'm a 40k n00b and I also have three armies (1 competive and 2 casual). LotR Army-------------Points -Misty Mountains-1250+ (more than 80 models including a dragon) -Dol Guldor-300 (13 models- they are my 'elites' and get allied on to my gobbos, but they are also a competitive army in their own right) -Elves (Rivendell and Lorien)-600 (plus 400pts worth of other heroes) and 200 points of wargs that I commonly ally onto my goblins WH40k Army-------------Points -Tyranids-1500+ -Black Templars-2000 -Chaos Space Marines-1500+ |
