I always suspected as much. Do you know if they photoshop minis for photos of big hordes. I was looking through the new DoS book and the spiders seem to have everything painted and based identically, right down to the small rocks and grass on the bases.

I know they used to with some of the older sourcebooks

I'm pretty sure they do sometimes. I think in the War of the Ring rulebook there was a very clear mistake or two perhaps. If I remember correctly in the Moria section and in the Battle for Lorien section. So yeah, I think they do that for larger battles.

Yes, they definitely photoshop pictures of large hordes of minis. They do this for all three of the main systems.

The rider of rohan on the bottom right corner. That's never been in the box set ever, its bothered me ever since I bought my first Riders of Rohan 7 years ago.

Looking through the riders I have I found him. However, in the plastics he has an arrow resting on the bow. The one pictured on the GW site you linked to doesn't have the arrow. Good find!

Ah, yes, those must also be metal. The horses are also different (and better). One of the horses resembles the old metal Haradrim horse, just the thing on his head being different.

Oh.. never noticed that actually! ^^ To be honest I like the version they relesed instead of this one nonetheless, his "viking" helm is pretty cool! :)

I don't know - I have never seen any. It probably depended on whether they had time to receive and paint some plastic ones for the box art. When did the Haradrim come out? With the ROTK minis? If so, GW would have had a long time to make them as the designs were shown briefly in the TTT in Ithilien. The best way to check is to compare very closely the minis on the box art with the minis you have. If any of the poses are slightly different (even slight differences in clothing etc.), the chances are they are metal prototypes.

I think they came out for RotK, I don't know for certain since I didn't start until 2005. I can't remember if they look slightly different on the old box, I think they did, I'd have to dig one out to check. I'd like to see a metal Haradrim Warrior though.

The Haradrim came out with the Battle of Pelennor Fields supplement, after RotK. I've looked at all the Haradrim Warriors in the supplement, and I see no noticeable difference between them and the plastic ones. They seem to have the same flat areas as the plastics (near where the moulds would have met), the left spear-arms etc. I highly doubt they have metal Haradrim Warriors personally.

By the way, jmh_stirling, I think about a year ago, there were some metal Numenoreans with swords on ebay. It were the four from the Last Alliance boxed set, but they came without shields and in metal. Do you happen to know if these were also prototypes?

Definitely! The metal protos are typically a couple of mm taller than their plastic counterparts and the detail is crisper. Metal proto standard Haradrim warriors, if they exist, would be very nice.

I always wondered, why the metal minis are slightly taller.. That even the same models come in two sizes, depending on the material seems strange to me, does anybody know why that is? Are the moulds different? :)

The proto vs final moulds on Warriors of Minas Tirth is painfully clear.

A lot less detail in the white tree on the shields, but it's overall a lot more defined and easy to paint on the metal proto versions (like it is on the Captain models), but the plastic versions have the full crest on them but it's a lot harder to pick out as it's raised up a lot less from the shield.

No but I've got the old RoTK starter box so I can see it in pretty good detail.

Basically the released plastic kits had shields as shown below:

And GW's 'Eavy Metal painted warriors used for the promo etc look like this:

So as we can see there's a clear difference between the definition of areas of the models, chiefly the tree emblems on the shield and the breast plate, of the plastic release models and what I presume are metal proto-models that GW own.

It's pretty similar to the different here:
(left = plastic Warrior, right = metal Captain, both were released)

If you get me.

I'm not too sure about the Minas Tirith shield theory there. I think the difference is done with paint.

Well on the plastic one you can see the dots that go around the tree but not on the metal ones.

Dang! Shame I missed those. I expect they will have been - I have the proto metal prologue elves with bows and swords. If you know it, could you PM me any details of the ebay sale and I will make some enquiries. 8)

Phew.. It must have been about half a year ago or more.. I think it was shipped from Australia, but I'm not sure.
However, I'm pretty sure DMS did a bid on it (but he didn't get it, IIRC). So, I guess you best bet is to ask him to look at his biddings, and in this way contact the guy. ;)

I think this was the discussion thread on those numenoreans John:

Thanks - I couldn't see the name of the seller or buyer. Perhaps DMS can help with those details?

I'm looking - it was a long time ago and i was not convinced of their authenticity hence i didn't go all in with my bid.

EDIT: My bidding history won't go back far enough to see who the seller was. Sorry John.
