Post subject: | Morgul Knights |
Just got a box of these plastic models for xmas, sweet! One thing puzzles me, I am trying to figure out what exactly they were. To me, the morgul knights were basically mounted cavalry of the black numenoreans, who were descended from the line of numenoreans that turned to Sauron during the second age. Now at this point of time at the War of the Ring, what exactly would these guys have looked like? Were they still at least in part human? Or are the morgul knights, some kind of spirit wraith-like cavalry, more akin to a mounted castellan of dol guldur? The Mouth of Sauron was of back numenorean descent to my mind, and still had a fleshy face as much as could be seen in the movie... However the models have a skeletal face...so are we to assume, what remained of the black numenoreans had "faded" somewhat like the ringwraiths as they craved immortality. I am interested in your thoughts, and if you can point to any weblinks that might shed more light on this subject. I had considered them to more human, than spirit, and am considering using a little greenstuff to redo their faces; fill in the eye sockets and give them a nose! But would like to get some kind of confirmation one way or the other... Thanks for any help |

The MK are basically intended to be next of kin to the MoS (Tolkein said in RotK that he's a Black Numenorean, so it's canon). GW just did a cheaper job of the faces on the plastics than on the metals - you can only get so much detail when you have to deal with the limitations of injection molds. Personally, I cut the faces off so that they looked more like lesser wraiths. I've been wanting that ever since I got into the hobby, so that I could have the mass of ghostly horsemen from Frodo's visit to Morgul Vale in TT. If you want them to look human-ish, though, they're definitely going to need noses. I'd love to see pix when you're done. |

@ theonerider Thanks for the reply. You have kinda confirmed my thoughts, albeit offering another alternative. For myself I didnt see them as wraith-like, more fleshy but corrupted as is the MoS. I had a look at the set of metal MKs (unstarted still in box) I have , and noted a similar exposed "teeth" but a more enclosed face guard hiding nose/eyes details. I think I'll go with the flesh look and attempt the noses... I'll post some pics if successful |

Yeah, that makes sense. I did it the way I did because I figured that the cavalry that leaves Minas Morgul in the Witchking's army (in the books) were Daggerwraiths from long before I knew there was a tabletop game. I look forward to seeing what you do with them! |
