I've just received a Helms Deep Eowyn model (the one in the dress) after buying it on ebay, and I want to do a white colour scheme. Any advice on how to get a smooth, layered white? All my whites in the past have been less than stellar. Either they come out as too transparent, with the base colour showing through (one of my Anglo Saxons Huscarls has a kite shield with a purple tinge to the white half), or I end up using so many coats of white that it gives a completely flat colour.

I've undercoated using Skull White. I was thinking to do a codex grey or fortress grey basecoat and layer up to pure white.

Also, whats up with the Article Library? The Tomes of Wisdom doesn't work and any links I can find to painting guides are broken.

Painting white is a very hard stuff.
When I was a beginner, I undercoated my Saruman with black. I had to use a lot of white for that XD

Well, the method, you mentioned, sounds good. Sometimes I use very thin, very watered grey wash also.

Sometimes the white also contains colors, yellow, or blue.

I already painted that figure, but I used the original colors:

This is not my figure above, this is just a masterpiece from CoolMiniOrNot.

This is what I'm aiming for. White Dress with a red-black corset or vest.

If you'll notice the image you provided has an off-white hue that is in the yellow range. If I were attempting to recreate that look I would use the following colors:

Basecoat -- Khemri Brown -- Nice light brown in the deepest folds that gives you a solid base to work with.
Blend up to Kommando Khaki
Then blend up to Bleached Bone
Add some Skull White to your Bleached Bone for a final highlight, but don't use straight Skull White, as it would be too stark.

Hope that helps!

I've not got any Kommando Khaki, would Dheneb Stone work?

You could try it, but Dheneb Stone might be a bit on the grey side (I can't remember off the top of my head). If it doesn't look right, you could approximate Kommando Khaki by mixing Khemri Brown and Bleached Bone.
