This version of Legolas has the Galadhrim bow - do you think it'd be easy enough to paint on the wood carving with liquid green stuff? The GW painters managed to pull off a great effort, but I don't think it was 3D. |

Don't think that's possible, it's way too thick for that kind of work...and if you'd dilute it, it won't be 3D anymore! Maybe if you paint it with lights and shadows, it will look like 3D from a distance? |

I've found that even undiluted liquid green stuff doesn't really 'thicken' when it dries... It's such a shame! I've been looking for ways to make intricate 3D patterning, too. :/ |

Surely layering it up would work? |

I think it would take a LOT of layers, I could be wrong though... |

The problem with sculpting with this material is that as it dries it shrinks and thus often looks nothing like what it looked like before it had dried. I learned this the "hard way" (not that it was that big of a deal) when I attempted to sculpt my Warg Maradur's claws (which were not present in the fincast molding). As it dried it settled into the holes of the miscast and looked nothing like the claw I sculpted. Thus requiring to revernt to green stuff. So my suggestion is that you use tiny tiny amounts of green stuff to do it, or revert to shadowing with paint and creating the illusion of three dimensions. |

http://40kmaunderings.blogspot.gr/2010/03/sculpting-105-fine-line-shaping.html A tutorial on fine line sculpting with greenstuff.. It doesn't sound very easy to me, but maybe it's worth a try.. |

How about painting it on with PVA glue? Won't do your fine brush much good though. |

Wow...that's a project. I think really fine greenstuff is going to be your best bet. If you want to look for alternatives, there may be something in the various craft stores that you can improvise with. For example, there are various thickness of 'bubble ink' that people use for decorating shirts and that comes out of like a squeeze tube. Similarly there are some glitter glues in tubes. Each of those may be too thick for your use unless you are very, very careful but from the couple times I've used products like this with the kids for craft/homework they seem to hold their size well. There are also 'sticky strings' (wikki stix) which you can be pretty creative with and they can be painted over with some effort, but they are pretty thick unless there's a way to shred them down. I just don't know if any of these ideas can be put down that thin. One thought you could try on a sprue rod as an experiment...put down a thin layer of white glue and lay out thread on the pattern. Then spray it with a fine pva/water mist to help it stick. It will probably an exercise in frustration but... You can probably get the look you want with your good freehanding or else try the greenstuff. |
