For years I have been using a matte varnish on my metal figures but I still get the occasional chip. I've heard that you can gloss varnish then use the matte over top. Has anyone used this to great effect?

I have used a gloss coat followed by Testors Dullcote. You can get it in a spray coat and a paint on matt varnish. It does give a great matt finish.

Varnish does not protect minis from chipping. Only good preparation before painting and good priming can help you with that.
