Out of interest, what do most people do when they want to assemble some Elves who won't be taking any special weapon choices at all? Say I was going to field some Galadhrim or Mirkwood elves in my next warband, and I'm not going to spend points to give them spears or Glaives or elven blades. The spears or glaives should be no problem at a glance because people can just look and say "I don't see a spear."

But elven blades will be a problem. How do I make a simple visual clue that this elf has a hand weapon (that's probably some sort of blade) that isn't an elven blade. To complicate it further, what if the warband contains both? If I have some elves with elven blades standing right next to some elves with hand weapons? How do I create an easy visual shorthand for my opponents?

There are a number of things you can do. Paint a different colored ring around their base, paint the blade a different color, paint the mini a different color, select a number of minis in a specific stance and indicate to your opponent, "these guys are using elven blades." Basically, just indicate a clear cut way for you and your opponent to quickly identify who has an elven blade and who doesnt.

You could do something as simple as putting a white line or simple design on the back of the base for models armed with Elven Blades, this would still allow you to keep a consistent theme across the warband and make it clear to your opponent beforehand so they can't come back and say ''you never told'' them

Not that I play Elves, but if I did, I'd use the simple rule of...

"If it has a shield, its just a standard sword. But if it has no shield, then it has an elven blade".

But under the new rules warriors are allowed to sling the shield across the backs

could you say where that is said in the rulebook ? Does it mean, elves can use their elven blade twohanded and still benefit from + 1D from the shield ? in that case those elven blade could be worth it.

I also wonder if glaives can be combined with shields, it seems it is..

Elves with two handed weapons 'could' sling a shield across their backs and get +1 defence, but they'd lose the ability to use their two handed special rule, so you wouldn't get +1 to wound.

It's been this way for a long time. As for the glaives for mirkwood elves, same principle would apply, after all they shield with those glaives as well as use them as elven blades/spears. Great piece of kit though.

I think people need to (who haven't already) just remember that the elven blade is there to give the elves killing power, but this is after you've began to thin their numbers or if you have an advantage in numbers in a singular fight, you might decide it's worth the -1 to roll.

In summary, yes you can give elven models with two handed weapons a shield (as long as it says so in their profile) however, you cannot benefit from the elven blade rule, it simply becomes a one-handed sword.

Actually it remains a 1 handed elven blade with the same bonus for tied fights, and it can still use the feint special strike to boot
