Do you think these would fit in well? They might be a little smaller on the scale but since they don't have armour would this not stand out too much? I've seen a lot of great metal models out there but this is the only cheap plastic set I can find.

1/72 is 20mm. They would be noticeably tiny. Like hobbit-sized almost.

However, I like Gripping Beast's plastic Dark Age warriors.

Other options I have found but have not yet got hold of are -

These from Perry miniatures which are pretty much perfect as is.

Or maybe conversions based on the following plastics

25mm, not 20mm. Probably won't look too out of place alongside the old Númenoréans and the likes, but expect them to be small next to most later figures, especially metal ones. If they're cheap, however, why not simply give them a shot and post the results?

Personally, I'd use gripping beasts dark age warriors.

I say go for it. If you are planning to have them fight hunter orcs or any other bad guys, they can look a little smaller and still be ok. Along side elves might be more noticeable but elves are suppose to be taller also.

I bought the Medieval Peasants thinking they would be good for Ruffians. They are only just 25mm to the top of the head and look small even beside Numenoreans! I wouldn't advise buying them!

Thanks for the warning do you have any pictures to show the militia next to GW models?

Here is a comparison with Legolas, Gimli and Sam:

Image

As you can see, he is about a head smaller than Legolas, and is the same height as Gimli! For Laketown you may wish to ally with some Dwarves - however they would end up the same height!
The proportions are a bit different too - simply put, they are a different scale entirely.
It is a pity they don't match as they are very inexpensive!
I should also mention that the detail is nowhere near as defined on these figures.

Hope this helps! :)

Fireforge Mongols are probably your closest plastic option to the official models.

Some people really like Gripping Beast's Dark Ages warriors, but I find them a little too static for a skirmish game.

Conquest Norman infantry might work, especially with some head swaps.

Another one to keep your eye on is a new fantasy skirmish game that Northstar is making called Frostgrave. There's a plastic henchmen set that has a rag-tag militia look to it, although I don't know about scale.

Depending on your goals you could use Perry's armed pilgrims

Here are some other possibles (check the second row)

Fireforge will be releasing their Russian Town Militia very soon. They are available for pre-order now. Not bad pricing and their other plastics are exactly to scale with GW LoTR minis! I'm totally going to order some! Their stuff is really great, I have some horsemen.
