May not be a big deal for most people, but it is for me. My 9 year old son and I spent our Sunday afternoon assembling and painting his box of Warriors of Minas Tirith ahead of our first game in 18 months. Now he's a bit older and a bit more interested, I am hoping our session next weekend should be a great way to get back into the game for me and for him. He read the Hobbit last week, has started reading The Fellowship, and watch the DVD on Saturday. Now he's going through the rulebook with a fine tooth comb!

This is great new for me (having a gaming buddy), and hopefully is something we can share into the future.

:)

Hey thats great that your son is getting into the game too. Hopefully my son will do the same one day (he's only 4 at the minute so a while to go yet i think)

I expect a detailed battle report explaining the ins and outs of how your son totals your army with his warriors of Minas Tirith. Enjoy your game!

By chance I discovered this hobby as a relaxation tool. I started miniature wargaming almost 2 years ago and have been hooked ever since. A year later, I introduced it to my son (12 years old at the time) and he took to it easily. Now we play LOTR SBG and historical miniature wargaming. Great bonding time for a Mum and teenage son! We are very competitive with each other and it's great fun.

Thanks folks. It should be great fun (young Sam is still dead keen!)

I was thinking of playing the Lord of the Rings theme music while the game is on - or is that trying a bit too hard?

Sounds great Alan. I hope you and your son enjoy it and find it motivates you both further on the hobby front.

Enjoy!

My boy is one and I can't wait to play games with him!
I always put on LotR soundtracks while I play with my brother. It's often hilarious to have dramatic music while rolling off for ties etc. so I say go for it!
Hope it's great fun =)

Nope. We play lotr music during lots of our games. It makes it feel all the more thematic. :D

We had a great game yesterday. Sam's Warriors of Minas Tirith took care of my orcs easily (curse my lack of bowmen). I blame the lack of paint on my orcs.

He's eager for another match, which is excellent.

I am so glad you gave us an update of your game. I was just about to ask for an update. By the way, did you go easy on him? Keep up the good work of being a great Dad!

No, I didn't go easy on him - there's no need, he always wins games. It's a little frustrating actually.

I was explaining the tactics as we played though and suggesting what he could do each turn - where best to place his archers in order to get clear shots of my orcs, how to move into combat with spears at the rear and swords at the front of a formation - things like that. And then he rolls 5s and 6s all the time.

But it was a good introduction for him and a chance for me to relearn the rules too, since it's been a couple of years since I played last.
