Tony Barnes, one of the original Rangers over on TLA passed away today. He was admitted to hospital with respiratory problems earlier today but deteriorated rapidly.

I am gutted. Tony was an absolute gentleman and I will miss his friendship enormously. If you knew him, please post a message here and I will pass them on to his wife Christine.

What was his tla username?

His username was TonyB, if I remember correctly.

I remember him well from my early days on TLA, when he locked the first thread I ever made because of a titling issue in it the Rangers at the time were sick of dealing with. Those were good times.

It saddens me to hear of his passing. It reminds me that there are people behind all the usernames here, whether I know them IRL or not.

My thoughts go out to his family, I wish them all the best.

Tony was a talented hobbyist, great writer and above all a gentleman and always really nice to everyone. May he rest in peace and condolences to his family.

I remember Tony proof read and shot down my first ever article submission on TLA in flames. "Obviously you have not bothered to look at the article submission guidelines whatsoever". Ha! That told me. He was pleased to see how far I had come since then. I met him a couple of times at wargames conventions when he was always busy running game demos for his club. A jolly fellow who moderated in a firm but fair manner. I will miss the big guy. RIP Tony. You were one of war gaming's true ambassadors.

What terrible news. My thoughts are with his family. I never met Tony, but I regularly saw his name on other wargaming sites. It was obvious that he loved the hobby (and more importantly the people involved) and he devoted a lot of time to helping people and organising games and events.

Probably one of the few people I could remember from the old days, although I've never had the pleasure to meet him (or have submissions rejected by him).
Still vividly remember his visible contributions in the form of painting/converting articles and the likes, I can only imagine the impact of his work behind the scenes.

My condolences to family and friends.

This is very sad news indeed. I didn't know him personally either, but I knew his works (there must also still be an article of him in the Tomes of Wisdom) and I remember him as a Ranger back in the days on TLA.

Ah, yes, I remember he checked some articles of mine too, back then. It seems so long ago now! He did indeed have a strict and fair rule, but this was necessary as TLA was huge back then.

My sincere condolences to all who knew him.

I chatted with Tony a few times at various shows. Great character, a stalwart exponent of wargaming across all manner of different systems and a leading light in the GCN. A great wargamer and a great bloke. Thanks for the memories, matey.
