Hi,

following Southern Dunedains advice (http://www.one-ring.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=23131), I have opened a new thread and would be really grateful for comments and criticism!

I am putting a 500 pt Rohan army together. I would be very much into riders only but that means very few models (I will primarily play against an Uruk-army with about 35 models).

Many thanks in advance!

Warband 1 7/12 - 173
Erkenbrand; horse
7 Westfold Redshield
----
Warband 2 7/12 - 188
Eomer (Riddermark); horse
7 Westfold Redshield
----
Warband 3 3/12 - 88
Eowyn; horse, shield, armour
3 Westfold Redshield
---
Warband 4 - 50
Huntsman

OR

Replace WB 2 and 4 with
Grimbold
10 Helmingas; shield, banner, bow

and 2 more Weastfolds for WB3

Questions:
1) Huntsman looks very good on paper (taking out Lutz, etc. by using hero points) - is he or should I replace him?
2) Riders or Helmingas (quantity)?
3) Any other suggestions? I what love to have throwing spears but are they worth it?

Thanks!

What's sucking up your points is too many heroes. You should max your warbands before adding another. Start with Erkenbrand and Eowyn and go from there, you'll find your numbers won't be quite so bad then. I don't think the Kings Huntsman is that great, and being independent makes him worse...you can really only afford him at a much higher point level. And Lurtz isn't your biggest concern...

Fielding all-cavalry is tough to do. It might help adding some Sons of Eorl for a bit higher strength, and it probably helps a lot now that RoR don't count towards the bow limit (assuming you're using the new Hobbit rules that apply a -1 penalty for moving and shooting). But Grimbold and some WoR with throwing spears (which now have an 8" range) might be just the ticket.

Well for a start you have way too many westfold redshields. Perhaps one warband full and the rest riders. I would definatly get grimbold with some helmingas. Eowyn and Erkenbrand are a must. You realy shouldnt rely too much on cavalry. Have a re-think about your 500pt army

Except he seems to want an all-cav army if possible. I think they make great flavour, and are really fun to play no matter the outcome, but expect the learning curve to be steep.

The 500pt all cavalry Rohan force I'm building for your reference

W1 mounted Erkenbrand
1x son of eorl
1x mounted Rohan royal guard
8x Westfold redshields with throwing spears

W2 mounted Eomer (shield, throwing spears)
1x son of eorl
1x mounted Rohan royal guard
8x Westfold redshields (7 throwing spears)

Should be fun!

Yeah agreed but depending on the scenario.

hi,

after a test-game following Kinsman's suggestions (thx), i think will better include more helmingas next time (it was fun and could have been better if I would have made less mistakes but still, s3 is...). it would be great if you comment. many thx!

W1 - Grimbold
12x Helmingas (+ 11 throwing spears, 12 shields, + banner)
= 199

W2 - Erkenbrand (on horse)
5x Westfold RoR (+ 5 throwing spears)
= 155

W3 - Gamling (on horse)
1x Son of E
4x Westfold RoR (+ 4 throwing spears)
= 146

-----

now, i was thinking about replacing

(a) gamling with eowyn (he is stronger, more defence and LP; only 9 points more expensive). that would enable me to upgrade 1 westfold in W2 to a SoE). keep gamling?
(b) upgrade gamling to eomer (mounted) as the latter is stronger - but would cost me 1 Westfold and the SoE. i guess that's not worth it, right?

What about this:

Warband1
Grimbold
9x Helmingas w/ Throwing Spears + Shield
3x Helmingas w/ Shield

Warand2
Erkenbrand
6x Westfold Redshield w/ Throwing Spears
1x Son of Eorl

Warband3
Eowyn
6x Westfold Redshield w/ Throwing Speras
1x Son of Eorl

I removed the banner as it is usually more important in 500pt and lower games to have more models on the table. This allowed the warbands to be beefed up a little.

As with yours the infantry warband is maxed out with Helmingas, most with TSpears. This should provide a solid base for holding an objective or melee. The two cavalry warbands now have 6 riders each in addition to their Hero, and each includes one Son of Eorl for a little extra punch.

Another option to consider, replace a few of the Westfold Riders in the warbands with mounted RRG. You give up the Throwing Spears and bows (maybe not a major issue considering the -1 move penalty) but gain some defense and the bodyguard rule. I've seen some basic GreenStuff and paint work to convert standard RoR models into RRG if cost is an issue (it usually is! 8) ).
