Hi!

I'm working on a small Rohan force at the moment and I suddenly realized I need someone to lead these brave men! For two reasons actually, I'd like to actually start playing the game, also I intend to join the March painting challenge.

So my question to you : who are the captains and lords of Rohan who do well on the battlefield? (Throw anything at me except Théoden, Éomer or Théodred. I just don't like their models :P )

Cheers, Sang

Footsloggers or cavalry?

For infantry, take Grimbold and maybe Eowyn
For cavalry, take Erkenbrand and Eomer (remember there are 2 models for him mounted and the same on foot).

There is only 4 of Eomer. Knight of Pelennor mtd, Marshall of the Riddermark mtd, Marshall of the Riddermark ft and Defenders of Rohan ft. The DoR is extremely hard to find seeing as it comes from a set now worth £70+

Footsloggers :) for now at least.

So Grimbold... he looks like a fun guy. Are Hama and Gamling any good?

ps: no Éomer!

Gamling is ok
Hama's special rule is wasted without Théoden so other heroes (maybe even a captain) would be better

Gamling and Hama are a waste.

Take Eowyn if you want someone cheap, who is essentially a very powerful soldier.

Take Erkenbrand if you want a relatively cheap yet incredibly effective hero

Take normal Eomer if you don't mind paying an extra few points for better hero than
Erkenbrand (though not a better asset to your army)

Take super Eomer if you want a real 'Aragorn level' hero to lead your troops
And lastly:

Take Grimbold if you don't mind paying quite a lot for a sub-par hero, but want your soldiers to have a higher strength value.

It's worth pointing out Erkenbrand is widely considered the best model for his points, i however really like Eowyn, she is better in many ways to a captain (who cost 10pts more than her), and despite her 1 wound, is very durable if you are good at keeping her safe.

Also, as a general note, don't be afraid to field your heroes on horses, even if they are leading infantry. The extra killing power a horse provides makes any hero 10x better.

I think I'll go for Grimbold. I'm really not looking for any mounted guys. Also, Erkenbrand is expensive

Is it a good idea to take Grimbold's Helmingas Command as well?

No, a banner may be useful in medium sized games. But Erkenbrand is the only model in the game who carries a horn that confers +2 courage, as opposed to the usual +1. I wouldn't bother with a regular hornblower - if you want to invest that many points, you may aswell just take Erk, who is also a great infantry leader btw.

Alright, I'll just stick to Grimbold then.
Thanks for the help. 8)

Cheers

I don't really see why someone would ever take normal Eomer. Eorl The Young gets like a mountain of extra stuff for about the same point cost.

When I build a Rohan force I always choose Erkenbrand first (for Westfold Redshields, 3 Might and 2+ courage) then Grimbold (S4 Helmingas). When I need more heroes I go for Eorl or Eowyn.

And Eorl isn't failcasted yet, while Erkenbrand is

EDIT: PLEASE REFRAIN FROM POSTING STATS ON THE FORUM. IT IS IN BREACH OF GAMES WORKSHOP COPYRIGHT. STATS DELETED.

THANKS

You can't post stats, my friend. GW will be crawling up our **** for it, they're very strict on the matter.

As far as taking Eomer over Eorl, it's down to theme. Eorl was long dead when any of the other named Rohirrim Heroes were born.

EDIT: Language lol

I take it you mean Erkenbrand's expensive in cash as he's an absolute steal for his points?

Even on foot Erkenbrand is still the top choice IMO, you may not get the WR bonus but his 3Might, F5 and +2 courage are incredibly good. In addition, I find his courage boost is even more useful in small games as you have less models to hold objectives etc. and so passing all those courage tests will really keep you in it.

Plus the figure is absolutely gorgeous, one of my favourites in the LOTR range.

My Rohan infantry hero choice would be:

Erkenbrand
Grimbold
Eowyn
Eomer

I discount Eorl for fluff reasons.

Yes, I meant expensive in cash. I really love his model as well, but I don't intend to expand my Rohan forces much more, I just want to have a small garrison to station on my Helm's Deep model.

Anyhow, I'm picking Grimbold. 8)

Cheers, Sang
