so iv decided on finally playing a good army for once and have decided on the dwarves. Any suggestions on key points to a 500 point army? ofcourse my strategy picking dwarves is close combat asap and smashing things. Are Wardens good or iron guard? are archers worth taking with this army? any one with experience with this army dont be afraid to leave a comment. Even if its just tactics anything is welcome. I know i wanna ally in spear support though

P.S. sorry for the terrible grammar im on a smartphone at work

Khazad Guard are your best friends at this point level. I'd also recommend Balin son of Fundin with Durin's axe and Gimli. For that small of points I try and avoid heroes who are 100+ points.

ah ok thanks for the advice on the KG i use to use them back in the day. Good point about the heroes i just like the Dain model alot. Oh and what about Murin, Flio or Mardin good or no?

Murin and Drar are very good. I use them more than any other Dwarf heroes. Floi is solid, obviously his big bonus is nerfing enemies. Mardin is really only useful when fielding Durin (in my opinion).
Dain is very much a beast, you can't go wrong with him. The King's Champion is the best dwarf hero though, if used properly

There isn't one. The Dwarves are in the "Free Peoples" rulebook

Unless you want "hobbit" dwarves.

That's true. They are just such a limited force at the moment I've only really considered them ally options, not a main force

You can get pretty nice forces for 500pts with only Army of Thor, like:

Mounted Thorin with Orcrist
Mounted Dwalin
Oin
12 Warriors of Erebor with shield
11 Warriors of Erebor with spear
1 Warrior of Erebor with banner

:)

Mounted Thorin , Mounted Dwalin .... tricky conversion

Personally for around 500 ive been trying out

6x Grimmhammers
6x Warriors of erebor with spear (2x shield on sides incase of any flanking archers
Thorin + oakenshield+orcrist (1h)

6x grimhammers
6x warriors of erebor with spears
Gloin

Dwalin

Played that list the other day , AGAINST

Bolg
12x hunter orcs on ft + warhorn + banner

fimbul on fell warg
6x hunter orc on fell warg + banner

End result was 34-6 The grimhammers on the charge got lucky with the throwing axes and took out 2 mounted units in first turn , i lost 3 grimhammers , 3 warriors of erebor with spear , my opponent lost EVERYONE bar bolg :)

Dwarfes ROCK!

And using terrain , heroic actions , GOOD DEPLOYMENT is a MUST!.

Bad choice of deployment usually hurts dwarf players early game like myself and others.

Superior strategy. I seldom care that my opponent is slightly faster because my troops can kick their butts in combat

Well in one game my bolg slew gimli, gloin and 12 or something grimhammers after all my goblins were taken out...

are spears worth allying in? or does the majority of dwarven players stay 100% dwarf

@Robshaw: Remember Gloin cannot lead erebor dwarves. He can only be taken in Thorin's Company.

As for erebor lists not being stand alone, I beg to differ. I took my pure erebor army to a tournament at the weekend and narrowly missed out on a podium finish.

Thorin w/ Orcrist & Oakenshield
4 Erebor Dwarves w/ shield
5 Erebor Dwarves w/ spear

Dwalin
4 Erebor Dwarves w/ shield
5 Erebor Dwarves w/ spear & shield

Balin
4 Erebor Dwarves w/ shield
4 Erebor Dwarves w/ spear & shield

At 500pts you have 29 dwarves, 22 of which are D7 or higher, with spear support. I tabled Dr Grant's feral army (twice) and beat the winner of the tournament with it. Balin is a handy guy to have around. If you're lucky, he can basically provide 4 might points with his re-roll priority ability.

Ah thank you for letting me know , as to your army i shall try it this weekend when i play my opponent , i will let you know the results once the game has been played.

Personally i dont like the uneveness of it , i prefer 6frontline followed by 6 backline with hero standing at back from bow fire. Guess im too used to having full warbands :)

Oh and i think i was using Gloin as solo company if that is allowed.
im currently trying a test of khazad guard , grimhammers , and iron guard.
as for balin... hmm priority is a must for such a small movement army ESPECIALLY for those throwing axe charges against cavalry for example. BTW do khazad guard and iron guard have throwing axes or not?

Iron Guard do, Khazads don't.

If I had done that then Balin's warband would have been woefully underpowered with only 2/3 warriors with him. Would have been easy pickings in Hold Ground. But having 8/9 warriors in each warband means the army is balanced and there is no obvious weakness (except balin but not really :P he took down Vrasku and a shaman).

Back on the original topic ;)

When I do use my Durin's Folk, I love using my Vault Wardens (surrounded by my D7 Erebors). D9 is very hard to take down (unless you are fighting monsters who will rend/ throw) especially when you cannot flank them. Iron guard are always a solid choice as they are str 4 2 attacks. Durin himself is very good for his points. Got a banner re-roll, war horn, +1 to wound etc etc.

What model do you use for Balin, the EFGT one or the new young balin - which i think is alot better looking , dont know about you but that is just me ( looks more menacing as young balin ).
