So the more I think about it, the more determined I am to bring a list which screams "Thermo/GBHL James" to the first GBHL Indie tournament of 2014 at Malice in Wonderland, Huddersfield. What could be more fluffy and apt than the following… List 1 W1 Eomer, Knight of the Pelennor (armoured horse, shield) 12 Sons of Eorl or list 2 W1 Eorl the Young (armoured horse) 12 Sons of Eorl W2 Warrior Maiden of Rohan (Eowyn with horse, shield, h.armour) Ha! Thoughts? The problem is, I would need 8 more Sons of 8 either way AND Eorl the Young if list 2 is the choice… which I'm leaning on for the potential free might plus additional cheap might bank of Eowyn. |

Great lists... but I find that Cavalry warbands operate better with a 1-hero to 6-cavalry ratio. Warbands don't HAVE to be 12. |

How about: Eorl 8 Sons of Eorl Outrider on foot (to cap bare objectives) Gwahir |

I know But thanks for the advice. Since it's a skirmish game and all cavalry can go their separate ways regardless, they're all in one war band for deployment reasons… to avoid maelstrom of battle dividing an already small force up to be taken down piecemeal, or one war band not entering the board until much later if rolling goes against me (depends on the scenario of course) In terms of ideal numbers in a cavalry war band, it depends entirely on the makeup of the war band and the roles of the units in it. For example, in my 500 point all mounted list which does reasonably well, there are 9 per war band, but 2 are outriders supporting with bow fire and 3 hold back from any initial charge for a potential counter attack should I lose priority after initial charge |

I'd go for the second list, nice theme and very fluffy and it's always good to see less-common heroes. However I'd put 6 of the sons with not-Eowyn so you have two balanced warbands, you don't want Eowyn getting left on her own in Hold Ground and I find cavalry work best in warbands of 4-6 where a hero's Standfast and Heroic Moves can cover all of them. I can't make Malice so this is an unbiased opinion! |

I think that list 1 screams thermo of gbhl! I know there isnt long to have that force complete in time but i think it would be the best of the 2 and would be an instant best army contender seeing that malicious cavalry charge |

Would go for list 2, maybe a less powerful hero, but more (and potentially: much more) Might. Besides, it is a theme of sorts as well: Eorl with his 12 sons and 1 daughter. Or Eorl with his wife and 12 sons, but it's not much of a 'maiden' then... Agreed with the above, give some protection to the damsel/some troops for her to lead. Probably a 8/4 division. |

I really like the idea of Eowyn representing the wife and queen, if only Sons of Eorl had Bodyguard because then you could rename it "Defend the Queen!" Or some other such thing |

How about swapping out some sons of Eorl for more Mounted Royal Guard in Not-Eowyn's warband who can Bodyguard her? Less new models to buy/paint that way too! I'm doing head-maths here but I reckon you could get: Eorl (armoured horse 6 Sons of Eorl Mrs Eorl with horse, heavy armour and shield 7 Mounted Mrs Eorl Royal Bodyguards (3 with throwing weapons) Everything stays at that magic D6, you get 1 more model, a few S3 missile shots and 6 less sons of Eorl to source! |

I agree, list 2 seems best! Whilst I'm having palpitations at the thought of having to buy and get that force ready, I think I would certainly prefer it to putting mounted RRG in there. With such a small force, I'll be relying heavily on those 42 attacks on the charge but more importantly, the 28 should I be countered! Plus the armoured horses to try get me to the charge in the first place… otherwise, I may as well bring just a snipped back version of what I already bring As for the lack of warriors in our Shield Maiden of Rohan's war band, more to do with deployment issues on some scenarios (see below) But will maybe do the 8/4 split as suggested. Quote: Since it's a skirmish game and all cavalry can go their separate ways regardless, they're all in one war band for deployment reasons… to avoid maelstrom of battle dividing an already small force up to be taken down piecemeal, or one war band not entering the board until much later if rolling goes against me (depends on the scenario of course)
