Hey all,

I've recently gotten back into playing and I've always liked the Mirkwood elves best so thats what I am working on. I've been playing 300 or 500 points using Thranduil and Legolas and a couple warbands of wood elf warriors with a wood elf sentinel or two, so old Thranduil's halls list, and I am wondering what people's opinions of the Tauriel, Mirkwood rangers and the Palace guard are? Are they worth the addition or replacement of the wood elf warriors?

Thanks guys,

P

Personally I like the Rangers and Tauriel as they bring some elite combat skill to the WE's. Plus they have 100% bows. My advice is to Ally them in but use them as your elites and understand where they're strong and where they're weak

At 300 I think you're risking a lot with them. But Tauriel is always worth her points she's great. The guard and rangers though are pricey. Personally I'd choose wood elf spearmen over palace guard unless you want a super elite army. And Kirkwood rangers are awesome because of their bow limit and special rule but you need to keep them safe. Overall though I'd much prefer the old wood elves.

Up to 500 points I find that there is no reason to ally mirkwood rangers as it lowers your model count seriously. Just stick with 3 warbands of thranduil, legolas and rumil (at least that's who I use and he is the man of the match every time). Then add 10 wood elves to each warband and there you have it, a very competitive 500 army with three awesome heroes and more might than hlyou are ever going to come up against at 500 points.

For 300 points I would not use legolas. Thranduil and rumil seem to work just fine. If you want more numbers you can always replace some of your heroes with stormcallers.

Now if you want to use the new mirkwood elves it would be very interesting to put together 2 warbands of mirkwood rangers led by tauriel, thranduil or legolas. 22+ shots are too much for your opponent to handle at 500 points and your troops are ment to be outnumbered. It would seem to me though that the old wood elves are a safer option.

Also I can never decide which two out of three I should choose. legolas, thranduil and tauriel. I think though that tauriel and legolas are the two best options (too much fury, bodyguard, sap will or high courage out there for aura of dismay)

I played a game against the new mirkwood elves and they were nasty! Legolas and Tauriel leading 20 mirkwood rangers and Kili was a tough nut to crack. If you blow your might on deploying as far away in the best spot possible you can shoot most armies to pieces with your mighty 25 shots.

You can spend might to affect deployment rolls?!?!?!?
I don't think this is in the rules of the scenarios.

you can only use might on hold ground and recon scenarios.

Blergh! Tauriel and kili.. Alright well thats some food for thought. What about using the palace guard models are Galadrim warriors? Would that be effective at all? I could take a warband with galadrim in front and wood elves with spears behind, seems like that could be pretty strong. How about the sentinels? If there's alot of high courage models are they not worth it?

Thranduil with his 2plus shooting wood elves plus optional spears
Rumil with Galadhrim warriors with supporting wood elf spears
Taurial with some mirkwood rangers
Mix and match numbers but that force would pack a punch.

With taurial keep her away from trolls and powerful heros send her alone against regular warband led by a captain with 12 warriors and she will kill every last one of them within only 4-5 turns. I've personally had her kill two goblin kings and 26 goblins in one game. She will be fine as long as you can use all the arrows you have on trolls and other monsters.

Alright, so for say 500 point, what I usually play, what would be a good list to mix in some old and new mirkwood?

This is pretty much what I have played in the past is

Thranduil
12x wood elf warriors
-4 with bow
-6 with spear

Legolas /w armor
12x wood elf warriors
-4 bow
-6 spear

WE Captain /w bow
1 WE Sentinel
3 WE Warriors
3 with spears

28 models, 12 bows, 15 spears, 5 throwing daggers, 8 might

Thats the gist anyways off the top of my head. So my question is how might I improve that by allying with the new list?

Heyo,

So i crunched the numbers and at 500 points I can one of two ways.

I can either go

Thranduil
12x wood elves
4 with bow
6 with spear

Legolas
12x wood elves
3 with bow
6 with spear
1 sentinel

Tauriel

or

Thranduil
12x wood elves
4 with bow
6 with spear

Legoals
12x wood elves
4 with bow
6 with spear

Tauriel
2 Mirkwood rangers

Which do you guys think is stronger? Or if there's a better way to build something at 500 let me know.
Thanks!

At 500 points a really simple wood elf force I came up with was:

Thranduil
10 WE with Spear

Rumil
10 WE with Spear

Legolas
10 WE with Bow

500 pts exactly. 9 might, 10 shots. 1 combat 1 shooting and 1 magic/all round hero. Seems balanced and effective but perhaps a bit boring :)

Yeah that seems solid but i am really wondering as to whether to go with the sentinel or rangers?
