Can a weapon really be worth that many points? In peoples experience is it worth the points? and how common is it as a upgrade?

Nope I'm afraid it's not, it was worth sooooo much more years ago when it first came out and there were far less abilities that essentially conferred the same thing and when there were less ways to deal with Heroes. We were chatting about this recently and worked out that, against D7 models or below, Dwalin gets exactly the same ability for 10 points :-)

It's not common at all on the tournament circuit but then neither is Aragorn, if I see an army which has dropped 250 points on Aragorn with his shiny sword my eyes light up

Its definitely worth it in large battles such as the "Pelennor fields" where we have typically used 5,000 on the table, and I have seen Aragorn take down a Mordor Troll with it on 1 turn, and even Mumak's treading carefully as a result.

But then Gil-Galad can reliably kill a Mordor Troll Chieftain in one or two turns and is more than 100pts cheaper.

Its that free might a turn that makes the difference allowing him to win fights and heroic combat, Particularly in a large battle lasting a long time this can be incredibly powerful, and the wound anything on a 4+.

Gil Galad tends to burn out and is vulnerable having one fate, though his causing terror is pretty useful as well as his mega high fight value.

Some of our larger battles have taken 2 or 3 days to play, and if you want stamina, Aragorn is unmatched. Anduril will pay off in such a battle, but may be too much of a points sink in a piddly skirmish.

I would have to agree with it. Longevity helps in big games when so many characters die. I always love when Aragorn is used and he kills trolls and such in one turn. :D

Longevity? Aragorn? lol, that actually funny. I was in a multiplayer game the other day, and Aragorn (with Anduril) tried to hide behind scenery and a battleline of Uruks and Numenoreans, and held ground but mounted Azog's high movement allowed him to charge, Fight 10 to Fight 8 (thanks to Heroic Strike) and Aragorn took 6 Wounds in one turn.

So, in answer to your question, no I do not think Aragorn with Anduril is worth it, but then again I was using the Necromancer at the same time, so it makes me sound a hypocrite to say that.

It's a lot of points to pay for something that other things can do for cheaper, especially on top of such an expensive hero. Aragorn might be worth bringing if you got Anduril for free, and maybe was f7...

But unfortunately not so...

Still, very cool hero and great fun to play as!
