Is there any way to use a dragon at 500 points and not get destroyed? Something like Dragon - Fly 12 Orc Warriors - 6 spear, 6 shield Mordor Orc Shaman 12 Orc Warriors - 6 spear, 12 shield |

Tbh I would rather use tough hide. With such a small amount of numbers you'll need the extra defence and wounds. |

I may be wrong but I dont think a dragon can lead a warband. Id rather take a cave drake any day especially at that pt limit |

In my copies of both Mordor and Moria books, the Dragon is not independent. I think Fly is mandatory. That was way he can pick his fights and potentially jump over battle lines to target heroes in the back. |

Depends on what you are fighting, since you don't really need to fight the dragon to win just break your orcs and wait for it to run. If you just what a fun game it will deliver, I've used a dragon at 350 and had a good time with it. The trouble is that in a list like you have above, there's not much more to do then have the orcs to distract your enemies as much a posable so your dragon can wreak the place in it's own time. Might help to get meaner support troops, gondabad black shields or morranon orcs. Fly is good for an upgrade, keeps the dragon from getting pinned by foot troops. You are not likely to win any tournaments but you could do worse that's for shore. |

If you're going for a dragon list you have to fully support your dragon Take a taskmaster dragon with fly and wrymtongu (to get enemy casters sap willed to stop them form annoying you, And to get enemy heroes out of line so they can't hide for your dragon 15 orcs with 1 piece of equipment (shield or spear) Remenmber you can support your dragon now...... Honestly the biggest reason you can be defeated with this list is because all an opponent has to do is kill your orcs. After only killing 13 models, you are now broken. And only 6 more means your army goes poof because of 25%. Therefore, your really not going to be able to win like you think. |

The problem is the Dragon has low courage; usually "Glorfindel lists" (as I like to call them) where an expensive unit is taken at a fairly low points level mops up the enemy by itself works. However, most of those units have high courage. The Dragon, quite frankly, is a bit of a wimp. |

Yeah I honestly might never take the dragon just because of his run away rule. Pathetic. A dragon running from one wound? Lol. Ill take the cave drake. |

I don't know if I would call him a wimp....more like he is just contemplating on whether that battle or that leader is worth breaking a nail for... |

That's why you save Will points for courage tests, and don't waste them on fire breath or something else stupid. |

Yeah I guess so but fire breath is so cool. Let's put it this way. I'm sour about the profile. If I take a dragon to battle I want him to deflect crossbow bolts and fart fire till he goes down in a hail of speeds swords and arrows. I don't want a hobbit to hit him in the leg with a stone and he runs away. |

Hopefully the rules for Smaug should rebalance the whole dragon issue |

Yeah Dragons are just really bad for their price. You can take any options, it doesn't really matter. They can't push out enough damage to ever be worth their cost, and are really easy to deal with. A wizard character, or even a pair of basic spell casters can keep a dragon locked down easily, burning the dragon's will points it needs for Courage tests (or breathing fire). Honestly for its base price it should just come with all 4 options, and then not have to spend will to breath fire. Then finally a Dragon would be a fearful foe to fight :/ |

The cave drake is so much better. 1 less attack 2 less might 2 less fate 1 less fight 75 less pts! and the best thing about the dragon being as strong as it can be is the flight perk and you have to pay another 50! Heck no. Harbinger of evil is the only thing the cave drake doesnt have which he should its weird. Anyway though, he DOES have cornered beast so instead of running like a cowardly dragon profile, he does a good strength 4 hit to everyone. Also, he ignores all difficult terrain, and finally, gaping maw is a special ability worth the pts. He can literally just killna multi wound hero model in 1 turn. |

Dragons at 500 pts are not worth it. I had a battle once where I killed the dragon (altho the dragon did passed all of his courage test) before it even went into combat and coule battle. |
