Which Nazgul proves to be the most useful? I am not considering the witch king at the moment, mainly the other named ones.

At the moment the Dwimmerlake looks good. His unique special ability could prove useful in tournaments when i'm trying to take down enemy heroes.

He's actually one of the worst. What exactly are you using your wraith for that's the most important thing. And what army?

It's for a tournament. 800 points. From my experience killing enemy heroes and breaking their army is the key. What named nazgul does that best?

my army so far

Azog/bolg on foot
Gundabad orc banner bearer with shield and spear
11 hunter orcs (x3 two handed weapons, x1 bow, x1 war horn)

Black nemenorian marshal with shield and armoured horse
6 black numenorians
1 spectres

Named nazgul on foot (leader)
4 black numenorians
1 spectre

Goblin captain
10 goblins (x1 two handed weapon)

Grinnah
10 goblins (x1 two handed weapon)

Khamul on fell beast does that best lol. On foot I'd probably say Knight of Umbar

I agree with JamesR on that from a gaming point of view however if he is leading Black Numenoreans then I would go for the Dark Marshall and if you have goblins then his special rule may come in handy with their horrible courage. However the choice is yours and you should pick the one you want as I can only advise you.

Wow the dark marshals banner rule is beast. I think I'll choose him.

Thanks for your help guys.

His rule is great but people don't seem to like the model! Anyhow I was glad to be of some help!

The Dwimmerlaik (DL) is not a bad choice at all - it completely depends on what else you have in your army which one you should take.

If you are willing to burn might or you are running a taskmaster, having a captain engage a big hero like thorin, aragorn, boromir etc. and calling heroics strikes is going to drain their might super fast if used along with the DL. Having acaptain with a high FV (like a numenorean or black guard) will basically force the opponent to also call a heroic strike or risk a quick death. Obviously you have to position your troops well enough so you have equal or more attacks than the hero, otherwise they will probably just take the risk and see if they can wait it out until they deal with the DL - so he isn't bad at all.

The DM is pretty straight forward and is probably more flexible than the others.
Khamul IMO is not that great, you are committing to combat with him, which also demands a mount or he won't wound and then will die just as fast as a vanilla wraith. He is better suited to more enduring armies like easterlings, moranon orcs etc.

Interesting point Hodush. I have a while so I'll continue to think of my options.

Just want some more advice, if I have the Dark Marshal, do you think I would then be better off dropping the banner in exchange for some more troops?

Post subject:  Re: Which Nazgul?

yes, dropping the banner is a good idea.
I find the dark marshall really handy.
stay safely behind your line, and throw some transfixes/black darts out. the fight 6 is also really handy to deal with some survivors at the end.

knight of umbar everytime. He has a lot of will which is partially protected by his magic armour and his combat mimicry is amazing. He does however realy need a fell beast to cause real havoc! I would not recomend him for magic though.

Post subject:  Re: Which Nazgul?

The knight of umbar could be a worthwhile investment. I want to keep the dark marshal though. Would it be worth while to trim the banner for extra points then replace the black numenorean marshal with the knight of umbar?

Post subject:  Re: Which Nazgul?

If I were you I would do that because the Numenorean marshal isn't that good! I was playing a 250pt game with a marshal, x6 Morgul Knights and then a Warband of Haradrim. I was up against Thorin and about x10 dwarf warriors with about 3 bows. Cutting a long story short my Marshal was up against 2 dwarf warriors that he had charged giving him 3 attacks. He was annihilated! So definitely go for the Knight of Umbar but be sure to give him a horse at least.

The knight is seriously hindered by his low will points and if you want a banner, just get a banner as there are some much better unique ring wraith abilities out there!

Gundabad Orcs can't take banners anyway, so you'd have to drop it. The Dwimmerlaik I found to be very nice, though I failed 3/4 of the M/W/F sapping rolls.

I dig the vanilla nazgul. However, if you're going to rock the witch king consider paying extra for his crown so he has 3A

I concur, especially as it gives him 4 attacks on the charge when mounted, and if on a fell beast he may use its strength as well. Also crucially he is hard to beat when the enemy gets the charge with four atttacks.

dark marshall all the time!
he does best what ringwraiths are supposed to do.
support your troops, throw some magic out, and ofcourse standfast!
No ringwraith in the whole list is a real killer.
Well, if you take their points-cost in account that is.
So why use them as killers?

Totally disagree on they're not killers. Last game I played with Khamul on horse he killed Galadriel Protectress and Thranduil by himself, as well as several minor troop kills. Even without Fell Beast some Nazgul are potent offensively

Bang on James R!

They are excellent head hunters but need to be used with careful consideration and skill. Often softening up key enemies with magic first.
