Hi all,
I decided to write one of my first 600 point lists today and thought that I'd dig out my Durin's Folk models and make a pure old-school dwarf list. The idea of Balin's expedition back to Moria took my fancy and this is what I've come up with:
W1: Balin, Son of Fundin with Durin's Axe (It's when they've established their presence and it's still going well. Actually screw that, the axe is just a must )
9 Iron Guard
W2: Floi Stonehand
3 Iron Guard
4 Dwarf Rangers with Throwing Axes
W3: King's Champion and Heralds
4 Dwarf Warriors with shield
2 Dwarf Warriors with Throwing Axes
4 Dwarf Rangers with Throwing Axes and Two-Handed Axes

I thought about swapping the TH Rangers for Khazads but wasn't sure about the theme. Also, I reasoned that Moria is quite confined and so would be unsuitable for archery. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you are worried about theme/fluff, how come your bringing Iron Guards?
I know the answer, they are awesome, but I do not think they would be present as their job was to protect trade routes?
They are also not part of the official Tolkien lore, which you are basing the expedition on..

Dain did not support Balin, so how would he be able to get the King's Champion to join him?

However, it would perhaps be boring just to fill the company with Captains and Dwarf Warriors/Rangers?
What about Iron Hill Veterans? If you wanted Khazad Guard, but do not think they fit with the theme, then surely Iron Hill Veterans would?
But I guess they would be technically illegal, even though one could perhaps assume that some Dwarves from the Iron Hills met with Balin close to The Shire, as he visited Bilbo before venturing out towards Moria.
He would surely have had relations or Dwarves that supported his quest, despite official approval.

Remember that Oin and Ori also went along with the expedition, should they be included, if not with their original profiles, as named Captains?

I do like that you keep the company low in number, as this would represent the fact that Dain did not approve.

W1: Balin, Son of Fundin with Durin's Axe
3 Iron Guard (Representing Frar, Loni and Nali)
4 Dwarf Warriors with Shield
4 Dwarf Warriors with Two-Handed Weapons
W2: Dwarf Captain with Shield and Throwing Axes (Floi being dead by the time they'd established themselves)
4 Dwarf Rangers with Throwing Axes
2 Dwarf Rangers with Throwing Axes and Two-Handed Weapons
W3: Dwarf Captain with Shield and Throwing Axes
4 Dwarf Rangers with Throwing Axes
2 Dwarf Rangers with Throwing Axes and Two-Handed Axes
W4: Ori, Champion of Erebor and Oin, Champion of Erebor (as it's post-BofFA)

Full fluff, not going to win me any tournaments, but do you think it fits the bill?

That is much better fluff-wise I think.
Not sure how the Champion profile suits this army or playing in general, as I have never used them..

How many points does it amount to?

It's still 600 points. I have also never used the new profiles, haven't even used regular thorin's company before, but I've been studying them and I'll use oin to just follow balin around and regenerate his wounds. I'll leave Ori nearby to make him regain might as well. Glad it checks out with the lore now, I was probably a bit stupid in putting a king's champion in when I knew that Dain didn't approve.
