I'm not sure if this is the right place for this so sorry up front if it isn't. What I wanted to check is if any one uses any alternate rules for skirmish/warband scale LOTR games. Our group already uses Mantic's KOW rules for mass battle stuff and that works great but we want to play smaller scale games and weren't sure where to go, from what I've seen on the net Saga is used by quite a few people and Foundry's God of Battles also seems a contender. Has anyone used or played with these rule sets and if so how are they and would they match up well with LOTR? |

Hi I have used Ganesha Games Songs of Blades & Heroes.. nice set of rules.. generic fantasy skirmish.. You can see them on Ganesha Games own site or through www.wargamevault.com There may be others ... but I have found these really playable, easy to use, and fun.. Hope that helps |

I like TSBG best but I have added elements from Warhammer Historical Legends of the Old west and High Seas. The army list and rules based on the models made by GW instead of based on Middle Earth is my major concern with SBG. You might want to try Reaper's game War Lord. I like the first addition best because it included How to point your own creations. Power gamers killed that for later additions. I would add the war band rules from Warlord to SBG. The war band rules for SBG look like a dumb down versions of WL any way. The rules for SBG are sound. The army list cause me concern but I don't play GW tournaments so the self serving restrictions don't cause me any problems at all. |

Try SAGA. Its a skirmish ruleset with typical games involving 30 - 50 models. It was originally written for Dark Age historicals, with recent expansions extending the periods backwards to Arthurian Britain and forwards to the First Crusade. But the system is extremely adaptable, and there are many fan written supplements and variants available on the forums for other time periods and universes. Anything from Medieval Japanese Samurai, to Game of Thrones, Ancient Romans and Greeks, to Lord of the Rings. Check out the forums and have a look at some of the battle reports. There are a few LOTR ones too. [urlhttp://studiotomahawk.freeforums.org/index.php[/url] |

Well my search has come to an end and I've found a rule set which not only meets my needs but surpasses them, Dragon Rampant. Easy, flexible and fun with the bonus that everything you need is in one book which you can typically get for around £12. Definitely worth a look if you are interested. |
