Yes, I used to use bits of metal sprue, but sliding was a problem. The sand+glue has just enough texture for grip.

I've been basing my Anglo Saxons using two 2 Pence coins, glued together (1mm wider in diameter than GW's LOTR slotta bases, and only slightly thicker).

It gives the plastic models a nice heft to them and ensures they have a low centre of gravity (bottom-heavy rather than top-heavy). But it sort of backfired with my metal figures - they're like a brick... :roll:
