That's far far too few models for an army that isn't all hero/all monster. You seem to be taking all the highest possible point things, if you want to spend a lot of points on high point models, either ally in lots of low pt models e.g. Lake Town Guards/WoR, or go 100% Heroes.

Well that's the problem with Grey Company, you cannot field them in a friendly spirit; you have no choice but to stand as far away as possible and shoot while backing away, which is a dull game for everyone. However if you go into combat you will have such a numerical disadvantge you will be slaughtered and the game will be equally joyless.

It's a shame because the lore is so good.

I think that games workshop needs one giant re vamped rule book put out like 3 years after the last hobbit models or something to fix all this stuff and come up with one final answer to everything.

That's what the blue one that was released in 2005 used to be called (by nickname) it is however, very out-of-date.

Hi mate, if you are new to the game then the only real decision that's important is to pick an army that you like the look or theme or idea of.

Grey company can be fun to use and play against and if you really like the idea of them I'd say go for it. By the same token if you really like the idea of having a gondor army, go with that.

If you get hooked on the hobby its only a matter of time before you end up with both :P

well i am a fan of both, but in fluff i probably prefer gondor. i was put off the grey company by the very low model count even by high elf standards. the reason i didnt do gondor to start with is the statlines but now i know a bit more about the game they seem a bit better

Go with the models you like best for fluff and theme :) then make sure you've got the sourcebook and go from there.

is there any way to get more numbers for GC, that makes sense for someone who cringes at the thought of an un themed army?

The problem with Grey Company trying to gain large numbers is that the fact you have to take 1 Dunedain(RotN?) for every 4 Rangers of Arnor (I'm not up to date with this) caps you very heavily, even if you're trying to get lots of shots off with a 100% bow force, and army such as Harad will turn up with 3x as many models as you, get more shots off due to their 50% bows, and then beat the Devlan Mud out of you in combat as they outnumber you. :)

if you're doing it for theme, and you want numbers, forget about elves/eagles/whatever and just max out on Dunedain/Rangers of the North and Rangers of Arnor.

If you're desperate to play GC go for it, but Gondor are a lot more forgiving for a new player, and you can still take Rangers of Ithillien. :)

I don't think it caps me heavily, 3x ROTN - spears + 12 RoA - 6 spears = 180pts

Well if you just do it that way without expensive heroes you'll be fine mate. It's just once you start adding Halbarad, Arathorn, etc, that things get pricey.

3x ROTN - spears + 12 RoA - 6 spears
3x ROTN - spears + 12 RoA - 6 spears = 360pts

12 Haradrim 6 spear 6 bow + Haradrim Cheiftain
12 Haradrim 6 spear 6 bow + Haradrim Cheiftain
12 Haradrim 6 spear 6 bow + Haradrim Cheiftain = 336 points.

Just to illustrate the point.

But honestly man if you like the theme just go for it. :)

Huh, just a quick question is a high elf warband w/ a captain around the same cost as a GC one?

I beg to differ, GC over here = Gold Coast. And I got all excited that there was a new local player

DWARVES!! You need Dwarves lad, they are heavier infantry than elves and have axes, bodyguards and decent lower cost hero killers. Use the GC to act a spear support and to provide archery, extra might and that super banner of theirs. While the dwarves add frontline troops and elites.

What used to be called Durin's folk is what you'll be after. They were used to represent the Blue mountains and dwarven merchants in the north. You'll have to pass by the bigger heroes for theme reasons but it's no great loss. There is a nice example list in the Arnor source book if you can get it. I can send you the list instead if you like.

Jackofhearts... don't be swayed by arguments that forces are not competitive/are competitive. Arguments for what you should or shouldn't be getting instead.

If you like the theme and the models, do it! That's all that matters. THEN try and find a way to win with them. My first army was Grey Company and lot's of people said the same to me. But I love the look and theme with them and have done well with them in the past.

If anything, I moved away from using them regularly because of the play style and because I found something I loved more... All mounted Rohan!

Again, consistently in army builder threads I was met with the same kind of barrage. And now I'm doing pretty good with them!

So the best bit of advice is go with the models you enjoy most. No point doing things like comparing how many bows a harad force might get in comparison. That shouldn't be the point. Otherwise all of us would have watcher of karma/corsair reaver armies. Go with what you like!
