Hi, I was thinking about making some kind of gaming board for my mines of Moria set. But instead of mines i am turning it more into a swamp. I was thinking about buying me a grass mat/ sheet , dunno so well how i should call it. And glue that grass onto some piece of cardboard. ( that would be game board size ( dunno how big I should make it ? might be bigger then just for Moria mines, because i want to be able to use it for regular games to.) I was wondering how i should make some water effects .. like it would like the grass is standing under water in some parts, and some parts only water... Surface should remain flat enough to put ruins or plants or something somewhere on the board. I thought it might be cool to have pieces of long grass all over it to. But I guess it would be more easy to store the board if it is flat... ( So i would make hills and stuff like that if i want to play separate. Advantage of changing the board quick and easy...) Any one has any good suggestions for developing this thing? (maybe i should keep it to a grass board and everything removable? swampwater and stuff on separate layers or something?) |

Okies, advice #1.. DON'T USE CARDBOARD AS THE BASE! Cardboard warps very easily once glue is applied and, while it is not as heavy as a wood base, it is much less durable and has the tendency to bend in very awkward and unhelpful angles. For water effects, I'd suggest E-Z Scenics Melt-and-pour. Much cheaper than normal water effects, and works well in my experience. I'll give this some more thought, and get back to you if I think of anything else. -Josh |

yeah, don't use cardboard. It's awful, and doesn't work. Try to use a wooden base or something. Sounds like a good idea though, I'd like to see it done. P.S. Never spray paint unprotected polystyrene, it goes all weird and melted. |

to spray paint un-protected polystyrene you need to use the paints called "H20" they don't melt it and have fairly good coverage while being water proof. |

the H20 paints i sujested are spray paints. and you should make the desition on what parts are going to be moduler. i would say keep it atleast partialy modular as it could get boringafter a few games if it was all static terrain. |

If you're looking to make movable terrain and have some dodgy old CDs lying around they make good bases, fairly strong and a good size for terrain items, the only drawback is that all your terrain bits will be exactly the same size and shape. |
