Hi, I've never played this before and don't own any miniatures but was thinking of starting to collect.
I was thinking of doing Gondor as my first army. what I would like to know is:
-is it a good beginner army,
-if not what army should I start with,
-and some miniature suggestions would help.

i would recommend the mines of moria box. it's about 80$ i think, but it contains good miniatures, scenery parts and a book with how to paint and how to play..

thanks for the help. I'll probably end up buying it, I have a vague idea of how to play from one of my friends, and can paint quite well (I used to collect 40k)

Gondor is the best beginner army in my opinion.
I would start with the Mines of Moria. If you have the cash getting a Warriors of Minas Tirith box set along with a command blister gives you enough for a good sized army.

Yes, it is definetely a good idea to get the mines of moria box set as it contains a rule book and a decent amount of figures. After that I would start seriously considering what army you would like to collect, if you post an idea I can (hopefully) give you the pros and cons of the army and why it would be/would not be a good army to collect.

There's no point in getting Mines of Moria unless you intend collecting goblins though and these and the Fellowship are lterally 2 a penny on ebay. I'd advise you to grab a rule-book of ebay, decide what army you like and buy the relative supplement and figs you want.

Gondor is a good army to start as all your main troops are plastic and therefore cheap - but you can say that with most armies now.

That is a fair point. I don't really want any of the fellowship as I am planning on making an army based around the rangers of Ithilien at Osgiliath. I've decided that a Gondor army would be best. because it is better for a price:points ratio and it is my favourite army from the books. I might see if I can get a cheap rulebook. does the rulebook have information on specific armies, or is it just the rules?

If Gondor is your favourite army, there's your answer The great thing about this game is you can make nearly any army work for you. I agree with hithero, no point in the Mines set. One nice thing about that set is there are some good intro scenarios to help learn the rules, but these are probably available in many other places, and they're not essential.

Instead I'd get the big rule book, and the Gondor in Flames sourcebook, which has a full compliment of updated profiles. Since you're looking at an Ithilien army, a box of rangers, and a box of warriors of Minas Tirith are necessary for a starting force. You'll also need a few heroes, starting with a command blister (Captain of Minas Tirith and banner). Faramir is also a great hero, so the Faramir and Damrod blister is kind of perfect.

As you build your army you can add some elites, like Osgiliath Vets and Citadel Guard. You can also ally with the Tower of Ecthelion army and others, giving you access to cavalry. Enjoy!

some 2 years ago the moria box was 50 euros and a rulebook 45, so i thought, why not buy moria. but i didn't thoguht about ebay:(

Hithero and Whafrog are totally right.

Warriors of Minas Tirith and even the Rangers are easy enough to pick up on eBay as are the rule books.

I find that Minas Tirith is a great army to play. I've not had experience using rangers but the warriors are great if used well. Good luck with finding all the bits and pieces and maybe you could post a WIP thread of your army so we can see how it progresses.

I agree with all of that. I like using the Rangers as snipers, picking off banners and other vulnerable models when I can.
