For example a Haradrim raider charges a Rohan archer.
As the raider charged, he gains the Extra Attack and Knockdown rule.
He has two attacks (as he charged) against the archer's one attack.
The raider wins the roll off and the archer is subsequently knocked down.

Does the raider:
get 4 'to wound' rolls?
get 2 'to wound' rolls with each roll getting two chances to wound?
get 2 'to wound' rolls?
get 2 'to wound' rolls with each wound causing two wounds?
or any other combination...

I keep reading the rules but I can't make sense of them.

Cheers,
BR

Not a stupid question, but a common one :) the answer is the second. If the raider had charged three archers and won the Duel, the most he could kill is two models: he gets two rolls to wound, and each roll gets two dice.

He can, however, still cause up to four wounds. Say he charges Aragorn and wins, any dice with a score high enough to wound still count.

Yeah an important one to remember is that even though you do get four chances to wound they have to go as two sets of two. So if for example you'd beat a warrior and a captain it would have to be four dice against one of them (probably the captain) or two against each. You couldn't roll one dice against the warrior and three against the captain.

Perfect, I was about to ask this exact question myself!

So to clarify (to my mind)

The rider get 2 rolls to wound from the extra attack (2 attacks total) for charging, and then 2 dice for each wounding roll beacuse his opponent is prone.

Is this correct?

So on the contrary to clarify for new players, then if the cavalry is charged by one infantryman and wins the fight, he does not knock down, and he rolls two dice to kill, correct?

Half right: he doesn't get the knockdown, nor does he get the extra attack. That's why it's so crucial to avoid being counter-charged by infantry.
