If an Axeman of Lossarnach uses his axe of Lossarnach as a spear (for supporting a model), can he use piercing strike?

Thanks!

Interesting question. Reading the rule, I'd say no only because it says Axe OR spear. Implies that you have to choose between poking your enemy with the pointy end (spear) or smashing it down on their head (axe).
Plus, spears don't get special strikes as they aren't a handweapon.

Thats the way that I interpretted it; however, the wording was a bit confusing as it was "use his axe as a spear or two handed weapon"...

With it saying his "axe" can be used in those two ways and axes being allowed piercing strike, that would make the axemen incredible for support as they wouldn't suffer the drawback of using piercing strike if supporting.

I don't want to read too much into the interpretation of the rule but I have high hope of finding considerable use for these models and I really wanted to use you guys' consensus as a ruling.

"use his axe AS a spear" pretty much defines the weapon will act exactly as a spear would, and therefore would not be able to make the piercing strike.

That would be my 2 cents on the matter.

I would play it the same way. If he is supporting, he cannot perform the piercing strike.

I'm in agreement with the Dunedain, it's not phrased the best but at least it prevents conversions to other weapon types (swords, maces etc)

I was under the impression (from memory) that supporting models weren't allowed to make special strikes anyway?

I thought that but couldn't find anything in the relevant documents to back that statement up.

I think that its obvious he can use that special strike. He can use it as a spear or ax.

And mertaal-it doesnt say he can only use a spear to support, so I assume you can just say hey bro, Im using it as a spear right now. AND STAB!!!

The operative word is "or". If he's using it as a spear, then he's not using it as an axe, therefore, no special strike.
