Bit of an odd one here, I was wondering what are people's views on custom bases, and does anyone know the ruling for them in regards to official tournaments?

The main reason I ask is that I've just bought some 40mm resin bases but upon receiving them they seem to be 42/43mm. I seem to remember reading somewhere that upscaling bases is okay, but downscaling is a no-no.

I know it sounds silly but I don't want to attach models to them only to find out that it isn't allowed and that they'd have to be removed from play.

I also realise that the best thing is to get in touch with the TO's beforehand, but figured I'd put the question out there and see what the general consensus is.

Cheers!

I think there was a bit in the rules about basing something on a larger base being ok, but not on a smaller base - you're right about that. Unfortunately, I remember it being in the big blue rulebook and don't remember whether it was carried over to The Hobbit rules...

I'm in the same boat. I have a bunch of the old Giant Spiders that I want to use as Mirkwood Spiders, but I'll have to get creative with my bases to make it feasible.

I also agree with your recollection that bases could go larger, but not smaller.

There is typically more advantage of going smaller than larger in SBG so I can understand that rule of thumb. That being said, the difference of +2mm is really pretty minimal isn't it? Most people wouldn't even see that difference on the table.

For my part, I have some Back2BaseX bases that I've used under some of my models at a Games Day several years back and it was not even a question. They were not perfect matches but they come up really, really darn close. I'm also making custom bases for my Mumuks. Again, not perfect but very close.

I can not see the harm in over size bases. It seems it would be to your disadvantage most of the time. However, wining is everything to some people. I can see someone trying to get you disqualified over it.

I have a lot of my old figures based for WarHammer. Several of my friends like games that use different base sizes. Rather than re-base I have made some new bases with sheet steel centers. I just switch the figures back and forth. The figures are already based on magnets. The spider base problem. I think you can address the same way. I am not going to enter GW events so it won't mater much to me.

I am going to use non GW toy spiders but 40mm magnetic base bottoms will work on the 60mm bases too.
