Does anyone have any ideas on the for or against argument of rangers holding back and shooting or going into battle? my 500 point force is

Aragorn (with Anduril)
4 Rangers of the North
18 Rangers of Arnor

(special rule: unlimited no. of bows!)

firstly that isnt a legal army

with for rangers of the north you are only allowed 16 normal rangers (incase you were thinking argorn does not count as a dunedain)

also that force will, im affraid do badly. you will be way outnumbered because basicaly you have aragorn in there, rule of thumb is you should never realy spend more than 1/3 of your points on hero's if you can avoif it and aragorn takes up over half!!! and then the rangers on top of him... :(

if you have too little numbers the grey companies advantage, all bows is prety much usless, because you may have 100% bows however, if you have so few numbers, that becomes usless,

It's boring as hell. If you want an army that stands and shoots play 40k and get a Tau codex...

The only time it's interesting playing or going against a shooty GC army is during specific scenarios where the goal isn't battle to the death.

I think adding elladan and elrohir instead of aragorn along with a few wood elves to add a bit of "boom" into it and give options of either shooting or close combat

Good choices :) Wood elves are tricky to play but very rewarding. You'll want to find the best use of their spears, throwing daggers, and sentinels.

BWT, just a clarification about GC: the 100% bows rule only applies if you have 1 RotN or Dunedain per 4 RoA. If you don't do that you're back to 33% limit. So you could easily take, say, Halbarad and a couple of RotN (or the Monkey Twins), and 18 RoA, only 6 of which can use their bows. This forces you to pick your ground better, and rely more on their (likely) superior fight values (and learn better generalship).

Most people see 100% bows and go "woohoo!" but you don't have to play them that way.

So, seeing as the only available Warrior models have bows, how does that work?

Same way it works for Riders of Rohan: all RoR have bows, but only the ones posed as shooting get to use them.

I think so. He's a bit more expensive than Halbarad, but has more attacks.
